I am working on a film about my late Grandfather, Harold Nathan Smith. He was in the 2nd battalion of the 503rd. He was in the So. Pacific from December 1942 - June 1944. He jumped at Nadzab and was in 2 other missions which I have not been able to I.D. I am going to submit the film to the Veteran's History Project at the Library of Congress. I am looking for anyone willing to allow me to use photographs of locations/experiences in Australia or New Guinea during that time period. I am also searching for any photos taken aboard the Poelau Laut as it was coming to Australia from Panama in November 1942. I can be reached at evan@intuitmotion.com Many thanks.

Evan, In the main, all of the photos of the 503d PRCT are in the public domain, although it is usual practice to do one's best to acknowledge the source. If the website mentions a source, then it is the source that should be named, rather than the website. If there's no source (there generally is), then credit the site. The practice of the men of the 503d has been to readily give permissions for image use, except where the site is commercial or there is a profit being made. (For instance, sometime ago, a fellow had acquired a number of 503d images and was producing copies of images and selling them on ebay at significant prices. This made some fellows madder than a bunch of angry bees.) I have compiled a number of books featuring the 503d images, and the prospect of any of them turning a profit is less than zero. No books have been published offset, they are all print on demand. You can see the books at paulwhitman.com - and there is one particularly concerning their time in Australia and New Guinea. Most of these have been converted to ePub format for people who have iPads. Together with Peter Parsons, i have also produced a documentary, CORREGIDOR - THE ROAD BACK. We did this so that the story could be told. It lost money, which is not any revelation, as it was never intended to do anything better than recover costs. I provided permissions for all images from my sites. I've seen only a very few images from the Poelau Laut, and these are somewhere's on the 503d website by permission of the copyright holder who was on the ship as the member of another unit.

Thanks for the reply. I found a couple of great pictures on the 503rd & Corrigedor sites. This one of Kenneth Kinsler, credited to the Daniel Macrailed Collection-- corregidor.org/archive/macraild/htm/one50_05.htmAnd another is here (3rd picture down)-- corregidor.org/heritage_battalion/poelau_laut/poelau_laut.html --the deck of the Poelau Laut, credited to Chet Nycum, whom I know has passed. The resolution is really small however, and I was interested in finding high res versions for my film. And yes, I know what you mean about the unprofitable nature of these projects. This is strictly a labor of love on my part!

Dan MacRaild is a fairly regular visitor to the forum, and quite approachable about permissions. Most all of Chet Nycum's own collection were of such poor resolution and bad condition, they were next to useless, and only barely so for web purposes.
