A friend of mine told me that she found a button just like this one in a cave on Corregidor. It was a number of years ago, so she's not sure exactly where she found it, but she was looking for some information on it. She was interested in knowing more about how it was manufactured and also what type of soldier would have worn it. I figured I'd ask on this forum, because there are so many knowledgeable people here.

It is a standard Imperial Japanese Navy button. It represents the Sakura (cherry blossom) and anchor which were the insignia of the Navy. They came in several different sizes depending upon use. They were essentially the same for both officers and enlisted men. Typically used for tunics and coats etc. They were made of differing materials during the war, brass, plated aluminum etc. The gold plating or wash is often worn thin during use. Given that most of the Japanese personnel on Corregidor were Navy by the end of the war, it is not surprising that this button was found there.
