Good evening Chad, I just see Registrar made a great reply to you. I’ll just recap a bit and add a couple photos. As you approach the rear of the Middleside Tunnel, you will notice the floor is wet and you can hear steady water dripping. How much is dripping/streaming depends on how much rain has fallen recently. At the rear of the tunnel it is a dead end however you will notice a big vertical shaft going straight up. Water running down this vertical shaft is what is known as the “shower room”. When looking up, you cannot see light at the top of the shaft as it has a horizontal section before reaching the surface. I was never equipped to go up or down this shaft and I am probably still alive because of that. I have heard the story Karl mentioned about someone getting stranded in the shaft years ago but I do not know any more details than he wrote. The last time I was in this tunnel was last March and it still has many bats in it. In some laterals you have to hug the sides while walking to not get whacked by them as they exit by the dozens. Its certainly worth a visit though. See you on “The Rock” someday. ________ Fantastic images, John, couldn't be better. I never thought images inside of tunnels would be interesting, but you have proven me quite wrong, and I thank you for illustrating. Would you guys mind if I moved all the posts about this tunnel to its own thread as no one would guess we'd hide a discussion about the interior of Middleside Tunnel in a thread about Mile Long/Pacific War Memorial ? - Registrar

Hello fots,
You must have a photo of every square mm of space on The Rock! Nice job, the pics say everything. Thank you. And welcome back.
Yes Registrar, I think that is a splendid idea. But I would like my "vote" to defer to the preferences of fots2. I have used much materiel from his previous posts here, so most of the credit belongs to him.
