I'm working on digitizing the 1935 map by using the 1936 map as a guide to what I cannot decipher. I have also digitally captured the coastline from the '36 map and found it was very similar to the 1941 emergency map. As there is only a small amount of detail on the '41 map, I've decided to capture it first. There is still a bit of cleaning up to do. The emergency defence positions are in red - they are the only purpose for the map so I think they were meant to stand out. However, I have not been able to decipher the signatures and initials of the draftsmen and approving officer. Any ideas. I really want to include these, if possible. There is also a small symbol marking, just to the north of road junction 56 (see Map in this post). There is a 3" AA gun mount and magazine near the symbol, but the earlier emplacements are not included on the '41 map. Any clues on what this symbol is?Martyn Keen

Hi Martyn,
There is an old 3-inch AA gun mount (keyhole type) for the 3-inch M1917gun located in the area of detail and together with it is a concrete magazine for the 3-inch ammo. "P" is usually an abbreviation for "Powder" or "Plotting" -- so if it was a designated plotting room it would have been the temporary wood and corrugated sheet type) or if its Powder, it would be the ammo storage for the AA gun.
Will also check it against my maps and see what else I can find.
Cheers, Tony

Hi Tony
You are correct with the explanation of 'P'. I am guessing US 3"AA gun functions with some form of plotter and predictor?
The 'P' could actually be along side the symbol - so the symbol and letter could refer to two different items. What looks like a 'J' at the bottom of the symbol is probably a curved line with an arrow pointing to near the intersection. The symbol - dashed circle and combination of a 'L' and 'B' inside - got me stumped.
The '41 map refers to the emergency defence installations. I thought it strange to have something from an earlier time added to the map. However, for some reason Battery Hearn and Battery James are also marked on this map, but no others.
Thanks for your help and regards
Martyn
