What's the latest on Corregidor's Walking Trails & Tunnels?
People who have been following us will be aware that Corregidor is not being maintained as it once was (what in life isn't?) and the state of its trails and tunnels can no longer be assumed. Hence, I have started this thread so that people who have been there recently can report. This thread is in the DISCUSSIONS Area so that people need not have to be members to make a post. For the same reason, I invite our moderators to delete any posts on this thread which are not on topic about going off-road on Corregidor.
If you are considering going anywhere off road, we recommend cheap rough leather gloves, boots with a thick sole & ankle support and a visit to Ace Hardware or Wilson Hardware for a set of "My Lola grows Orchids" pruning shears with a round blade, nothing remotely suggesting stabbing, as security personnel are generally a bit stupid. Don't try and bring the pruning shears in your hand-luggage.
To kick things off, so that you know what we'd like to hear from you, here are some edited comments from recent correspondence:
Reported as of July 2018:
From Grubbs to Smith to Hanna, as of July 2018: The trail to Hanna is ok, crossing thru the grass on Smith Road and from Smith to Grubbs Trail you got to look a little harder. Also the trail into Smith does have a couple area where one got to be careful. I looked at the steps of the ladder in Hanna and gave up the idea going down there a few years ago. Many years ago I walked from Cheney to Hanna and the trail going up Hanna side WAS VERY BAD. But I understand may have been cleaned. (Source: KWW)
The trail to Wheeler Tunnel should be ok (January 2019), just a little harder.(Source: KWW)
Feb 18.
Recent hearsay is that the North Shore Road from B-James to Eng Ravine as grown over but remains walkable. The same source reported the trail to B-Morrison as bad.
"It's been a few years since I went down into the Hanna Tunnel, one of my favorites, but the bottom couple of wooden rungs were rotted through so I advise extreme caution. If anyone gets a chance, see if those rungs have been replaced." (Source: SK)
KWW & PFW report as of Feb 2018:
The road to Wheeler Point lookout has been blocked by two very large trees for example for a few years, closing it to any vehicle traffic. The rest of the way to Cheney is long, thick grass and heavy growth in the rear of the battery. The road between the SOQ and the Parade Ground has high grass but can be walked.
MR reports as of November 2018: It was almost impossible to hike from Battery James over to the Engineering Ravine and this is normally like a gravel road hike. PFW reports that this road, which used to be open to a vehicle, was been cut by a severe landslide, but that walkers can skirt the washout. in some places where the grass is long, it may be difficult to see a washout, so keep your wits about you.
February 2018:
The walk up to the crest of Malinta Hill is still open, but overgrown. The safety ropes are looking very ratty. The entry to the trail is hidden by very long grass, so unless you know where to start, you might miss it if you're not paying attention. ( Source:PFW).
