Hello,
My name is Sallyanne Powell and I'm a member of the Mulgrave Shire Historical Society in Gordonvale Qld, Australia. This year marks 80 years since the 503rd made Gordonvale it's base for nine months in 1942/43. I'm hoping to write short stories about some of the local ladies who married 503rd members. If any of your members have information and/or photos that might be related to my research and are willing to share I would be most grateful.
Regards Sallyanne Powell

Sounds like an interesting project. I hope you get some help. You might check with Paul Whitman and see if he can help.

Dear Rick, Thank you for your comment and good wishes. Will I find Paul on the this website? Sallyanne G'day, Sallyanne. I see you're involved with the Mulgrave Historical Association. I had some correspondence with them several years back, and they had much more info than I ever did about the 503d in Gordonvale. I have one lead for you. One is GEORGE MICKEL, who was in Bill Calhoun's platoon. Mickel had married an Australian girl, but the marriage hadn't been recognized by the army. Mickel was killed on Corregidor, and Bill touches on the tragedy of his death, and the personal tragedy. It would be in the "My Day with the Rattlesnakes" so search the name and "Rattlesnakes". Somewhere else, I forget where, Bill wrote that he always worried whether the entirety of Mickel's possessions were returned to his wife in Australia, rather than directed to his next of kin in the US. Mickel had told Bill that this was one of his greatest concerns, for he was not afraid to die anywhere near a much that his wife might miss out on her entitlement.

Thanks very much for your reply and for the tip. Yes, the MSHS does have a lot of information about the 503rd in Gordonvale, but unfortunately not a lot about the women who married members of the platoon. I found George Mikel's (apparently he changed the spelling of his name) entry on Find A Grave and some records on Ancestry. I can't find a marriage record on the Queensland BDM site, so I might have hit a brick wall. I had a look at rattlesnakes too. Am I by any chance talking to Paul Whitman?
Regards Sallyanne
Yes. I prefer private correspondence go via the Personal messages system.

I do not have much info which isn't already on the websites.
