Alright guys, Some, if not most of us who has been a part of the regular tour to the Japanese Peace Garden would here how the guides (here we go again) would emphasize on the Shinyo Suicide Boat Unit. No question about the existence and the role played by this Japanese Navy unit on Corregidor. Where I am confused is the photo of the said unit: Now these guys seems to be wearing Japanese Naval aviator uniforms. I can be wrong but I have never seen Japanese sailors (ship or surface vessel units) in this type of outfit, complete with the head gear and googles and with the type of boots that are seen with aviators. Any thoughts?

batteryboy, Perhaps the reason for the naval aviator type uniforms came from the origin of the young men who manned the Shinyo Special Attack Squadrons. Read this short article: wgordon.web.wesleyan.edu/kamikaze/books/japanese/nikaido/index.htmIn at least some cases, those who manned the squadrons were originally slated for navy flight training. Due to Japan’s shortage of airplanes and fuel near the end of the war, the author of this book was one of 50 ‘kids’ transferred to Shinyo suicide squadrons. Maybe this happened on a much larger scale throughout the Japanese navy and the uniform became standard issue even though short lived...(ignore the pun) There is also a photo there that shows similar uniforms as to those in your photo. Hope this helps.

Yup, your post and analysis helps a lot. A friend of mine just now sent an email confirming what you just mentioned.
Thanks

Close up of the tunnel used by the "Q" boats on Corregidor. Does anyone know if they still exist or where they are located? Attachments:

Hi dmether, Here is a high tide photo of what some of the Shinyo boat caves look like today. Other boat caves on both the north and south sides of Corregidor still exist. Interior of one of the caves. Sand has washed into it. A closer view of a Shinyo suicide boat.

The caves (man-made tunnels) in the photo you posted today do not exist anymore. The ones from yesterdays photo are still there.
You post great quality photos. They are very useful for detailed viewing of the 1945 terrain. Thank-you.

Howdy all, looking at the photos with the Q boats at the cave entrance I see the japs used rails to mobilise the boats . I wonder if they came from the trolley car lines ?
