Well army junk and Buster, I am a nice person, and for you pair to suggest otherwise is well...... not nice
As for the tin, the first post made no mention of an owner, did it?
Having collected militaria for over 35 years i have seen my fair share of fake items, and the reason people fake em is for money, and believe me i`ve seen some good fakes and forgeries.
German badges that were worn on the jacket are a popular item to forge and the fact that the people doing it have some of the original molds makes it virtually impossible to tell the difference, and when you can sell them for £220+ you can see why they do it!
British soldiers had to have a letter from there commanding officer to bring back japanese swords and other edged weapons, It makes the items more valuable to have this letter, dealers know this, so its a case of buyer beware!
What about Japanese battle flags, and good luck flags, they can sell for hundreds of pounds, easily faked and sold to the unwary.
Nearly got caught out with one of them myself, luckily my wife at the time could tell the difference, yeah thats right dudes i was married to a Japanese gal.
Which brings me back to the mess tin, a mess tin of that era probably worth nowt, with names and place scratched on it, hmmm interesting to a collector and possibly worth a nice sum if it can be proved.
And just because its in a museum does not mean its genuine. The local museum here had a Japanese battle flag in pride of place, that is untill i saw it, did`nt look right to me, and my wife at the time confirmed it, the Japanese characters were not correct for that era, and some of them were Chinese, a fake, so red faces all around there!
Hey tell you what, i will produce a Japanese battle flag with all the usual sayings on it and add defenders of Corregidor and an army unit that was there, then find a guy who was in the 503 who has died and say its a genuine souvenir that he brought home with him,
by the time i`d finished you would`nt know the difference! How much would you pay for something like that army junk?
Buyer beware, don`t believe anything what you hear or read and only half of what you see and you won`t go far wrong.
