My apologies if this has been posted before. I searched the site and could not find that it had been.


In January 1958 a detachment of US Marines from Subic Bay set up a small radar station on Corregidor. They were TDY there for about ten weeks, bivouacking in the remains of the hospital.

Actor John Wayne, while filming the movie "The Barbarian and the Geisha", took a helicopter to Corregidor for a visit. While there, he had lunch with the marines.

John Marckx, USMC, was a member of the detachment. He took this photo of Wayne eating lunch. Standing in the background on KP duty is another individual known to US history. Can you identify him? His name is revealed below the photograph:

Thanks for posting this one...I had long known about it but just hadn't really had enough for an article on it, so had "forgotten."

The radar detachment would set up on Corregidor on an annual basis, as an exercise. It was by virtue of his work in a radar unit that LHO became aware of the operational altitudes being used by the U-2's over the USSR.

The altitude of "Racecar" was the most critical factor in the equation necessary to shoot a U-2 down, because there was no missile available which could be fired to that altitude and then catch the aircraft - it simply took too long for the missile to get to altitude, and by that time, the aircraft was elsewhere. Thus, if the altitude was known, missiles could be fired to the altitude ahead of the aircraft.

In Japan, LHO was seen to be entertaining at expensive night-clubs far beyond his pay grade, and to consort with expensive women -- the suggestion was that he had on-sold the secret information of the U-2's operating altitude to agents of a foreign power.

That's very interesting, EXO. I wonder how much Francis Gary Powers' misfortune a couple years later could be attributed to Oswald. Lawyers for the Warren Commission suspected that he had contacted communist agents in the Philippines and Japan during his military tours there.

Just before Oswald left for Corregidor, a marine he was aquainted with was shot to death under mysterious circumstances while on guard duty. Although some suspected Oswald was involved, the death was ruled accidental.

Fall of Corregidor and the Philippine Islands; 75th Anniversary Commemoration on Corregidor, the 6th of May 2017.

The Philippine Government, together with American counterparts remembered the Corregidor Siege, the sacrifices and the fall, today, the 6th of May 2017.

The Corregidor Foundation Inc. (CFI), with the help of all the participants, organized everything. I was there; I believe it was a job well done, Bravo Zulu!

4th Marines tour Corregidor on 2017-05-05:
The 6th of May 2017 was the 75 Anniversary of the Fall of Corregidor and all of the Philippines. Authorities planed a commemoration for this date of history on Corregidor, the ex Fort Mills. The 4th Marines stationed on Okinawa wanted to participate. A detachment of about 25 Marines or more with their Commanding Officer arrived on Corregidor one day early. The Marine Corps Attaché, EXO and I met them and went along on a Corregidor tour, answered questions and pointed out the relevant areas of the 4th Marines engaging the enemy in the defense of Corregidor in 1942. This album is about the Marines touring the ex Fort Mills on Corregidor Island.

This first batch of 7 Corregidor pictures was presented in a webpage, long gone now, of the Subic Bay Marines Barracks. I copied them and post them again with credit to Subic Bay Marines.



#1 picture shows Lorcha Dock and Malinta Hill from the north shore at Bottomside Corregidor. The picture was original labeled: “SBM1952pg1ApproachingCorregidor1”.

#2 picture I’m unable to recognize it accurately, but I’m fairly sure it is shot from an approach to Corregidor at the Northshore, Bottomside Corregidor. The picture was original labeled: “SBM1952pg2ApproachingCorregidor2”. Maybe someone else can?

#3 picture shows a plaque marker that doesn’t exist anymore, I guess this is located near the area of Lorcha Dock or between it and Malinta Hill. The picture was original labeled: “SBM1952pg1BillMartinonCorregidor”.

#5 picture shows a navy craft moored to the former Fort Mills North Mine Dock on Corregidor, in back, across the North Channel we see Mount Mariveles. My guess is, that that craft is a Navy Tug, it must sucked up a few gallons of diesel if it came from Subic, but maybe it came from Cavite. The picture was original labeled: “SBM1952pg2TheBoattoCorregidor”.

#6 picture shows an AA gun and I assume it was a Japanese one; I saw a similar gun frame on Corregidor but it was for two firing barrels. But I never saw this 3 barrel gun anywhere. The picture was original labeled: “SBM1962 Corregidor AA Gun”.
