Hey Patty....This U-Boat discovery rings a bell with me about a story that aired on The History Channel several years ago. This woman, living in New Jersey or some such location on the East Coast, a German War Bride, was telling of having a brother entombed in a German U-Boat that was sunk almost within viewing distance of her present seaside home. She was lamenting at how bittersweet it was knowing that her only brother was lying so close to her comfortable, ocean front domicile. She had watched the story of the German vessel being discovered, being readily identified, etc and promptly realized that it was her brother's Submarine. Strange story, doncha think?

Yes Okla, very eerie. I always feel a little melancholy when I see old news reels. I wonder how many of the guys shown made it through the war. Just imagine seeing a loved one and knowing that in just a little while they would be dead. Or watching one now randomly on tv and seeing your husband or brother. I always say a little mental prayer that if these guys didn't make it, that they went quickly and with the least amount of pain and suffering as possible. Just took Chad to the airport so maybe I'll have some free time to post more on Margaret Utinsky. Or explore this site. There is so much posted here! Stay cool-----we have 91% humidity this morning already! Ugh! Patty

Hey Patty....I feel about the same way as you when I look at old photos, newsreels, etc from WW 2. I always wonder what fate met these young guys. This is especially true when I am looking at the faces of GIs that are shown of those serving on Bataan and Corregidor, knowing that some tough times were in store for them. Yes, we are suffering from the heat here in Tulsa. Over 100 degrees for I don't know how many days in a row. We are getting a repeat of last summer, only this year it began about three weeks sooner than 2011. I hate hot weather and the older I get, the more it bugs me. Cheers. Postscript....I, as a kid of about eleven, residing in Springfild, Missouri, was sitting in a darkened movie house, viewing newsreel reports of Iwo Jima when this shriek startled the whole audience. Seems that a mother had spotted (and it was later verified) her USMC son all hunkered down on the beach during that bloodbath. It turned out that he survived the battle, but I don't know if he made it to V-J day. I, and my family relocated to Oklahoma shortly afterward. Hope the lady saw her son return to the bosom of his family. That Iwo operation was a mess. The father of a High School friend of mine was a corpsman at Iwo Jima and he was very reluctant to talk about it in later years.
