I recently bought a bamboo vase that is inscribed as follows: "New York Frisco Hawaii Guam China Manila AM PI Mekil E. Ham Btry . HQ 60th C.A." There is some very nice artwork with mermaids, a fellow playing the lute, flowers, etc. One of the figures MAY have a "2" on her shoulder, or maybe it is just draping. It's about 15" high with a removeable lid. I looked through the roster for the 60th as of 1942 on this site, but didn't see Mr. Ham. Might anyone be able to help me identify this individual? Thanks!

Hey Digger...Obviously the ports, cities, etc listed were "stop offs" on this soldier's trip to the Far East (man o man, how long did this voyage take? ), but what really puzzles me is the "AM PI" portion of the inscription. Initially I thought it might be a Navy Enlisted rating, etc, but if he was a member of the 60th CA he would be Army. If memory serves, the 60th was an Anti Aircraft Regiment, shipped out to the PI in the prewar buildup by the USAFFE for Corregidor. I also wonder if this man's first name, "Mekil" is misspelled?? I say this because I had a cigarette lighter engraved with a few words, etc while on R&R in Japan in 1952 and, of course, the local guy botched a couple of words. This might not be considered a big deal, but I find your query very interesting. I hope somebody sheds some light on this for you.
