Hello Mark, Welcome to the forum. I think I've come across your grandfather's name in some of my readings; it sounds familiar. Do you have any more information such as his unit, etc.? There is some interesting information on this site about the Oryoku Maru in the following thread, pages 3 thru 6: corregidor.proboards.com/thread/987/fort-wint-subic-bay#Chad

Good Day Chad,
Thanks for your acceptance in the forum. I've been researching in earnest for about 15 years and have come across many details regarding the OM. Let me say that your forums posts are amazing. I've always wanted to go visit the PI and go to Olongapo and try to locate the tennis court. I do know that there was a reunion trip to the tennis court by OM survivors in 1984 and they did find the old water spigot.
My grandfather was sent to the PI with the 19th Bomb Group, 93rd Bombardment Sq. on 10/4/41 on the Tasker H. Bliss (President Taft). On 12/2/1941 he was transferred to Hq&Hq Squadron 19th Bomb Group. Of course the rest is history. He sailed to Mindanao on the SS Mayon and based at Del Monte Field until the surrender.
Thank you again and am looking forward to participating in the forum.
Mark Kelso
