Recently, some of our good members were experiencing trouble uploading images to the proboards storage space, for hosting there. I've finally been able to get to the issue, which is that (a)proboards provides 200MB for the use of image storage and (b) we've run out of free space.
The cost for a further 300MB storage is $3 per month.

Maybe some of us should ante up a couple of years worth for now. $72 isn't much if split up between a few of us. I'm in for $24.00.

Until it happens. Bob, I have (a) restricted the general membership's right to post storage to STAFF ONLY and (b) made you a member of staff. Chad, I have noticed that in some of your threads (eg corregidor.proboards.com/post/5040) you have managed to get a proboards image hosted as well as a photobucket album. Is it possible for you to exit your posts and delete the duplicate proboards image? Can someone give us an up to date summary as to which image hosting places offer the best opportunity for storage?

Sherwino suggested Flickr and I went there and am happy with it but I have a ton of files and photos on photobucket which took me weeks to upload and I'm not about to that work all over again.

Hi guys,
I have a couple of questions. Please bear with me.
This is my first and only, so far, experience with this kind of web site.
As I understand it, EXO and maybe one or two others started the Heritage BN/Corregidor site some years ago. They choose Proboards to provide the foundation or the web hosting for the site.
With this hosting comes 200MB of free storage space on their server. We have now outgrown the original 200 MB. An additional 300MB may be purchased for roughly $3/month.
Am I correct in assuming we outgrew the 200MB mainly because of all the gorgeous photos and maps placed on threads? Since those are basically the core of the site, as well as the information exchange, we have reached a point where money needs to be exchanged to keep our ability to put up information.
Is there a member's fee to join? Is there a moderate yearly fee to help keep things going? How much trouble is there in setting up this type of transaction? Would it be simpler to send a personal message to EXO asking for his mailing address and then just mailing him a check for 'dues'?
My last question is more technical.
When I post a photo from say Photobucket, is that photo saved on the Proboards server using up some of the 200MB?
EXO when you mentioned “I have (a) restricted the general membership's right to post storage to STAFF ONLY”, what do you mean by 'to post storage?
How should we be posting photos and such to minimize space used? When we post a photo using Photobucket, is the address of the picture actually saved in the post so that when one opens the thread and sees the pictures, that is because Proboards has sent out to Photobucket requesting the image for that address? The megabytes needed for the TEXT of that picture's address are less than the megabytes needed for the ACTUAL picture, right?
So we really should not be posting photos and such directly from our hard drives but using a service like Photobucket or Flickr?
Am I making any sense?
Thanks for taking the time and energy to read and answer this...........
Patty

We can limit photo uploads to staff but we severely limit the potential of new and interesting photos being posted by regular and new members. We can ask members to go back and remove old postings to reduce and improve space on the forum but then that really makes the thread make no sense when one reads the responses to the post that no longer exists. The entire thread would then have to be removed
We can ante up a few bucks and add the extra 100 mb.

I decided to do a little research... For those of us who do not fully understand how it works (Like Me). Here's what I found out. Pro Boards can host images in two ways. 1) Through an attachment. Make sure attachments are enabled, and then in a post, look at the top right and you will see a button for "Add Attachment". 2) And through other means with staff powers only, so not everyone can do this. Pro Boards only gives you 200mb free for the above method of posting images. If you need more, the Administrator has to purchase. Attachments are uploaded from your computer, and are hosted by the forum, and by extension, ProBoards. This is why there's a limit on the amount you can upload, because not only does it take up server space for Pro Boards, but also bandwidth too. tags however don't have a limit. All they do is convert an outside link to an image. The image being there doesn't take up any ProBoards resources, so there's no need to limit them. If you're going to use tags, make sure that the image you're linking to is either yours, or publicly available for use. If you use other people's images (especially if you don't rehost them, known as 'hotlinking') then it will take up their bandwidth, and they will get angry with you. So, if you are a member and like to share images, it is best to have an outside storage site such as photo bucket. I know when I first started a few months ago, I posted images using the attachment method. I have since started using photo bucket and have converted most of them to being hosted by photo bucket and NOT Pro Boards by keeping them as an attachment. That being said, as new member and not knowing the ropes, it was nice being able to post images right away using the attachment method (until I realized the better way). If the group decides more storage is needed, I will contribute. Todd

I'll pony up some loot, maybe a paypal donation button should be added to the main page, along with, say, quarterly goals and results so far. Photobucket is better than nothing, but not much. Sometimes it takes weeks, sometimes months or years, but eventually most accounts go dormant, and all the pics are lost. I'm a member of some militaria sites, browse through the old threads, and almost all of them are gutted with "image no longer available" buttons throughout the thread. In short, it is not a viable long term solution, server storage is whats needed.

I agree but some new rules must apply. One such should be that any posts with more than one photo, photos must come as a link to a photo sharing site such as Photobucket, Flickr or similar site. This also means "you cannot post three consecutive times if you have three photos".
If this is enforced and photo's are under one MB, we have room for at least an additional 100 photo's. If we insist that photos be under .5 MB, we have room for 200 additional photos. We can can also enforce a .25MB rule for that matter and still have good quality photos for viewing on this site.
