I'm thinking about visiting and staying a few nights instead of just a day trip so that I can do extensive day and night photography. Is the place safe to wonder around a night and how do you go about getting to different places around the island?
Thanks! Gus

I'm not sure about the safety of traveling the island at night. I have been to Corregidor many times and have always been in the Hotel by nightfall except one time. (Usually so tired from walking all day it's hard enough to stay awake and eat dinner). The Hotel doors are locked about 10.00, there is a night guard, and they remain locked in the morning until 6:00 am
The one time I was loose after dark, Paul and I were on Topside in one of the old Officers Quarters buildings near the Lighthouse. We were toasting a former resident, her brother and father, in her old house . She was Col. Kirkpatrick's daughter, who was the commander of Fort Drum. It started getting dark and a couple of kids came and told us we were not to be on Topside at night. We said OK, and a few minutes latter a couple of guards came and told us the same, we were not allowed up there at night, so back to our Hotel we went.
There are places near the Hotel like MacArthur's that are open past dark. (Lots of poor singing can penetrate the night from there on occasion). I have also heard of some groups camping out on Topside with permission. There are other groups that camp on the South beach for weeks at a time.
You can get rides on Hotel transport throughout the day with little trouble, ( you will need to stay there for that service?) they will drop you where you wish and pick you up latter if you ask. I get rides to the far reaches of the island and walk back to the Hotel all the time.
You may need special permission and a guard to go with you if you want to go somewhere on the island other than Bottomside after dark is my guess. Lots of places on Corregidor would be much more dangerous at night, few lights anywhere on the island. One false step on top on The Mile long Barracks at night for example and you may plunge through a bomb hole and go down 3 stores...... There may be other possible issues being on an island in the middle of Manila bay surrounded by boats which I don't care to speculate about. I know others have stayed in the Row Houses, don't know if they were chased indoors or to Bottomside after dark.
If you can, plan on spending as much time on the island as you can. Being there for a few days only makes you wish you were there longer.

If you are a guest of the hotel, just about any thing can be arranged, upon request. That is my opinion based on past observations. The hotel has night tours thru the Malinta Tunnel. It gets going or is coming in the dark to observe sun rises and sun sets.

Hmm...do you think it's worth trying to stay overnight for night photography? If the sites are not accessible or not safe, maybe it's not worth the trouble.
I'm going to check the with the hotel and see if ground transport can be made available at night.
Thanks for your help!

Gussy, You should go to the island for your night pictures. When you get there, tell Benadero, bald, always meets the boats, he is in charge of the island on site, he should be able to help you with your night pictures or get someone who can go with you. Or take the Sunset tour or night Tunnel tour with some extras thrown in. The Hotel may also be able to help as Karl pointed out.
My previous response was based on my personal experiences. I also was assuming you were going to try to navigate the island on your own. I don't want to put a pale on your trip............enjoy!

Hi Guys,
I've been to corregidor island many times (can't count it any more) and stayed more than a couple of days. It's safe to go arround at night provided you have somebody from the admin (corregidor) to acompany you for safety. But for us no need to, we know the place like the back of our hands. Even you are only a visitor and not a hotel guest they can arrange for a night trip for a minimal fee. There are lots of graded area's. Me and my buddies pitched tent at the south dock. We leave our things and find them the same way as is. Bena is the island manager and assisted by Bambie. At the old hospital, you will find a huge tree that roots embrace part of the building. Its worth visiting the place at night.

I had to go out one morning to C1 tunnel area to look for my friends lost passport/travelers checks. I arranged at 6am next morning with the hotel van driver. He and my friend searched the road and battery while I went down the path to the tunnel with a flashlight. Man it was dark. You can arrange anything, but dont forget gratuity.
