My name is Paul Birdseye.. I am an English Expat living in the Philippines... My family has some interesting Naval history... my great great Uncle was a Petty Officer Archie Arthur Crowhurst a stoker on the HMS Mary Rose... killed in action when his ship was lost October 17, 1917... while protecting a convoy along with HMS Strongbow... against the Bremse and Brummer... sadly they were badly outgunned...
Another great Uncle Alfred Archie Laird was lost Christmas Eve 1941 aboard the HMS Salvia, a Corvette sunk by U-568 in the Mediterranean... poor luck really since he'd been picked out of the water after the sinking of HMS Juno, and had spent time in a hospital ship in Alexandria, and was actually on his way home at the time of the U boat attack.
There stories relayed to me as a child sparked my love of history, marine archaeology and respect for those who served and those who continue to serve.
Anyway... My Filipino wife and I own a modest home on Baloy beach near Olongapo and I love to dive the wrecks and reefs of Subic Bay and study the history behind them... I think wrecks should only be disturbed to preserve their stories and bring it to a wider audience. I don't condone raping historical wrecks or treasure hunting.. (unless its gold bars of course!!) :-) I am currently reading "The Cruise of the Lanikai" by "Kemp Tolley" as it details part of the history of one of the wrecks I often dive on in Subic Bay... As often happens I was looking up a reference about some PBY-3 Catalina's being sunk in Subic and followed a reference to Sisiman Bay and Mariveles Harbor... and there to this board. I've already corresponded with Everett Perry regarding the Canopus, and look forward to learning from fellow posters and helping in return where I can. Thank You...
