John,
I am curious how you and many others, know so much about Corregidor and why this group is so interested in Corregidor? Did you all have some history on the island or just because its a blast to be out there?
Well I can certainly see how there can be to much detail on a map that ends up making it hard to read and understand. That would be a lot of fun to use a GPS and get the exact point of where all the caves are and map them out out a more simple map! In fact it would be nice to have two maps one simple map that has all the caves and tunnels on it and then the second map with all the details of everything else! That might be difficult or take a while but it would be ideal. I saw your pictures on the link at the beginning of this forum so the same ones in the link you sent me. There were a few caves that I didn't see on those pictures that im sure you know about but just didn't have time to make it too! There are a few caves in James Ravine one I've always called the 1918 cave. It was an underground barracks I believe. There is some collapsed part of it but not too bad. Also there is a cave there that has a bunch of graphite rods strewn all over the ground inside. This 1918 barracks cave has a twin over near Battery James but I've never been successful in locating it, so either im looking in the wrong area or it was bombed so badly that it collapsed. I was looking either for the entrance or the air shaft, either of which i could enter the cave. Then there is a cave just opposite the road from Battery James that had collapsed that my brother and I dug out. We dug a hole pretty much the size of our body and so barely fit in. That one is dangerous for there is a huge boulder that looks like its about to fall right down over the opening. There are a few others that i didn't see in your pix too but im sure you know of all those. I would love to make it to corregidor with you guys sometime, but right now I just can't afford the ticket to fly from here to there. I was thinking about maybe flying over on December 10 or so and staying with my parents in Manila till January 6 or so but unless I get a good deal on a flight I don't think ill make it. Maybe someday though I will be there the same time you guys are and i can learn more about it all from you! There is one historian that I saw on this group, Brian Davis who lives in the Philippines, I met him and camped with him several times out on Corregidor, it was a blast because he knew a lot of the history behind certain places we went where as I only knew where the places were. However I lost touch with him a long time ago and just saw his name on this website. Well if and when you ever get a map together I would love to have some input in it though I doubt that I know anything new about the place, it seems that your knowledge base of the Rock is far superior in every aspect. Oh also there is one cave that opens up to a medical building that I did see in the pictures you had and you called it "a tunnel near the Pacific War Memorial" well that tunnel belongs to what is called battery Globe! If i am not mistaken it was an AA battery that actually took down some planes, (i read that somewhere). Anyhow my older brother discovered it long ago and then no one went to it until i came along and I showed my friends and then one time I came to it some one had a trail right to it and a rope and ladder and that ruined it all for me! I was all about finding caves no one went to, but obviously someone wasn't about that! haha! Anyhow that is a fun tunnel/underground building. When I first went there there were spent bullets strewn all over the ground, just on top of the ground both in the tunnel below and inside the building. Im sure there still are caves and tunnels that are like that but so far the ones i've stumbled across seem to have already been explored by someone. Probably all you guys! haha! Digging up a collapsed tunnel would be something I would really enjoy, who knows what sort of things would be in there. I take it that you guys are pretty good friends with Ron Benadero, he is a neat guy. I know him somewhat too. He checked up on me and my friends wherever we were camping and that was neat. Well Im rambling on again, I guess It's just nice to have someone who knows more about corregidor that I do to talk to. In High school i knew the most about it. Anyhow i'll stop now! haha. Take care.
