I'm working on the case of some remains that were buried in the Abucay Hacienda area. The body was buried in January 1942 by some Scouts who said it was their Colonel. I find two Colonels who died in January 1942. Loren Stewart, who commanded the 45th or the 57th PS (there is some confusion) who I think it was for many reasons. The other O6 who died in January 1942 was John Oliver Hoskins who was with Hq Philippine Department who died on January 22, 1942. I found this account of his death, but I'm not sure of the location. It seems to be somewhere on the Bataan West road, but I'm not sure of the location other than to say it sounds unlikely that he would have been buried anywhere in the Abucay area. bigenealogy.org/wp-content/uploads/BIGS-NL-0117.pages.pdfCan anyone better define the location of his death - where would the lines have been on Jan 22? Any other information on this man would also be appreciated.

Hello John I have been working, studying and walking the Mauban Line for some time now. This is my work: corregidor.proboards.com/thread/1546/mauban-defense-line-1942The story of his death in the link is an outstanding contribution!!!!!!! Za926. Karl’s GPS tracks of some of his WWII Mauban Line walks. Za926. I indicated the most likely spot by saying:”I bet on this one!!!!!!”, that is based on the way I experienced the geography there and it is closest to the spot where post war Japanese visitors have come to. I could send you my KMZ files.

Karl - thank you so much for the help. The Morang Line is a battle and terrain that I know little about and you got me in the ballpark. The government has taken the position that the American Colonel's remains recovered from Abucay Hacienda could be any Colonel. However, there were only two O6's who died in January 1942 and where Hoskins died was just about as far from Abucay as one could be and still be in Bataan. I don't think there is any doubt that the Abucay Hacienda remains are those of Loren Stewart as the Scouts said they were burying their colonel and Abie Abraham, who recovered the remains, said they were Stuart, which is a common alternate spelling of Stewart. I think I've found Hoskins' Xfile, but there is a glitch in the story so I can't be sure. Attached is a map from the X-file showing where three sets of remains were recovered. (According to Tears in the Darkness, there were four in the car.) Does this map show the proper location of the Morang roadblock ambush? bataanmissing.com/Pages/MapFrom%20Manila_2_RP_X-1835.pdfHere's the letter suggesting that the remains are Hoskins: bataanmissing.com/Pages/Page8From%20Manila_2_RP_X-1835.pdfHowever, one of the three remains were identified as Captain Abbott based on a book in his pocket and Abbott is believed to have died on the BDM on April 30 (which was the date of the last arrival at Camp O'Donnell). Thanks again for your help. Best, John[

John
Km 169 would have been a little more than half way between Bagac to Morong, so the map you reference does not jive at all. It shows the Bagac to Pilar road, going across Bataan on a west east axis.
I many of the WWII book or stories, the authors reference the Km stones. I believe the locations at WWII do not jive anymore today and may be several km off.
In all my pictures at my Mauban explorations, I have several KM stone shots but not one at the Japanese road block. So a rough guess right now, where I believe the most likely road block was is now about km stone 164.
The road block blocked the Bagac to Morong Road, about half way. That rod runs on a north south axis. The distance between Morong and Bagac is about 25 km and like I said, the ambush was about at the halfway mark.

Thanks, Karl, there's just to much wrong with this to be the grave of COL Hoskins. Dates, number of remains and especially the location.
I'll bet there is an Xfile on him, the problem is so many of the files don't include a good location and it will be a good trick to find it.
Best,
John
