One of the several things I was chuffed to acquire for the Battle of Manila website was the personal permission to reproduce an extract of Jack Butler's "The Four-Deucers' Battle of Manila". It was so great to be in contact with someone who was in Manila contemporaneously with my father. A 'four-deucer', in case you are unaware, is the M30 (106.7 mm )four point two inch heavy mortar, a rifled, muzzle-loading, high-angle-of-fire weapon used for long-range indirect fire support to infantry units. It's a light, readily transportable weapon much loved by the infantry. I'm now getting a little more familiar with the features available on our new-technology ' page-flipping' software. It contains a handy, link function which can create a 'hot spot' on a page which creates a link facility to other any other URL's. Very handy that! Sometimes, though, I wonder if it's a good thing to send a reader elsewhere, as they're hard enough to attract in the first place. But WTF, it's a free world. At any rate, here's the direct extract from Jack Butler's "The Four-Deucers' Battle of Manila". It's already at the Battle of Manila . Org website, but the flipping page program provides it with a single click, and it looks better!
