Listing of other KIA's on Corregidor

One of the projects I have been pursuing, long term, is a listing of the men killed on Corregidor. This has been largely completed for the men of the 503d PRCT, but there were other units involved in the operation. Most obvious is the Third Battalion of the 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Division - who had casualties atop Malinta Hill. Their brief history considered their mission atop Malinta to be their "most violent days of the war."

Additionally, 2d Battalion 151st Infantry Regiment was not a part of the Rock Force, but was was detached to relieve the 3d Bn 34th Infantry, and landed on Corregidor's Black Beach on 24 February 1945. It thereafter continued mopping-up operations in league with the 503d PRCT, assisting to secure the island sufficiently that on 2 March Colonel Jones could present General MacArthur with Fortress Corregidor at the formal raising of the flag on the old Spanish flagpole at Topside. The entire island was turned over to the 151st on 8 March. From Corregidor, the 2d Battalion, 151st Infantry Regiment assaulted Caballo Island, about a mile south, on 27 March. Fire support was provided by the 163d Field Artillery Battalion from Corregidor, and by the 150th Field Artillery Battalion from Bataan. Mopping up operations lasted until Company F was relieved on 13 April. Some Japanese did remain on the island, and in fact twenty Japanese resisted capture until 1 Jan 1946.

The American Battle Monuments Commission has a database of burials and missing men, and this has been my first source. Obviously, further KIA's were buried privately, and thus their names cannot be located except by finding their names in published works or in the Official Unit Histories of the respective units.

I'll be glad to help out with this project. I was thinking the same thing when I started looking into the Ohio men and then it spilled over into all 503rd men. Why not men from the 34th? They fought right with the 503rd.

I have a new name to add to the list.

I found that there were 38 KIA and 153 WIA for the 24th Division on Corregidor. This gives us a goal to honor these 38 men once we account for them all.

I'll be on the look out for men to add to this list.

The more the merrier, so to speak.

There's always that sort of pressure when we get into these projects, pleasant realizations that we've opened the door into fresh areas where we can pursue our interests. Of course whenever you look at something closer, it become more complex.

It was this sort of thing that has caused me to acquire the new internet domain of rockforce.org

Yet even the concept of Rock Force doesn't seem to cover the whole field. After the 34th were relieved, the 151st Infantry (38th Division) took over. So far, I have found NO text or article about their time on Corregidor, except for the brief mention that they too attempted to take Battery Monja (Wheeler Point) from the Japanese, and likewise failed.

Thus I have no idea how many men they may have lost - and so the names listed are simply those whom the American Battle Monuments Commission database lists as KIA during the period the 151st were on Corregidor.

I neglected to ask Guy Crull (603 Tank Co.), when he was alive and available via e-mail, the names of his tank crew, and deserve a kick in the ass for that. He was the tank's only survivor. I've written his daughter but have not received a response yet.

I will be creating another list page for these men so we can fill in the blanks. Give me time, I have a few projects ongoing already.

Each unit has its list of casualties, but overall, there seems to be no list of casualties (ie KIA) ever compiled in one place. What we can say is that the total number of men who died retaking Corregidor has not been accurately determined. Maybe it cannot be. But it is many more than just those of the 503d and the 34th Inf.

I have obtained a full listing of the KIA's of the 34th Inf, 24th Div and have thus been able to extract a number of further names from it. There's still a long way to go!!

If anyone reads of a man being killed on Corregidor in a non-503d PRCT Unit, - or in the retaking of it (such as that of a USN KIA not on the USS Fletcher) we'd be pleased to hear from you. That's a lot of not's, so don't get yourself in a not about it.
