Hi Everyone
I’ve been trying to date the presence of the old Air Corps buildings later used by the 92nd CA (P.S.) and which then became known as the 92nd Garage Area. This didn’t take long because I have no information anyway.
I checked some new photos that have been posted in the forum of the CDSG website. These are a nice set of historic photos of Corregidor with some of Fort Drum.
One Corregidor photo was taken from Topside across San Jose Bay and into the Garage Area. It looks like nearly all the Air Corps buildings in the Garage Area were intact when the photo was taken. This means nothing as the photo is undated.
However, the subject photo appears to be part of a series, probably by the same photographer, and hence maybe taken over a short period of a year or so. One of the other photos is of the Malinta West Portal, which is newly concreted, but with a temporary service rail and temporary construction rail alongside. I’m guessing this latter photo is from 1932 or a bit later but well before 1936 when the railway through the tunnel should have been installed and complete.
If these photos are from the same time period, then the 92nd Garage Area still had all, or nearly all, of the original Air Corps buildings intact at the same time. Interestingly, on the subject photo, the seaplane ramps are visible as well as the 7 x 155mm semi-fixed gun mounts between Camp and Ordnance Points (there are 6 marked on the 1936 map, but the text says 7).
On the subject photo, the area where the first Malinta South Portal was to be constructed shows no structures, but does show some disturbance. The south portal was partly constructed by 1934, as we have a blue print covering the state of construction to that date. In 1932, there was a large corregated iron building in this area. It is not in the subject photograph. By 1936 there was a smaller searchlight generator shelter in this area. Again that is not on the subject photo.
Also, by the time the subject photo was taken, one of the Air Corps era barracks has been removed, which is correct for it is not listed on the 1935 map. There were of course further Air Corps building removals by 1936 as recorded on the 1936 map.
So, this may indicate the subject photo was taken between 1932 and 1935. This is interesting as we do not have Sheet 3 of the 3 sheet set of 1932 maps for the Mapping Project. I am trying to reproduce the 1932 sheet 3 from the 1936 edition. However, the subject photo indicates the old Air Corps building may have been intact in 1932. Therefore using the 1936 map sheet 3 presents some problems.
Can anyone provide any information or photos of buildings in and around the Air Corps/92nd CA (P.S.) Garage Area? Anything dated or that helps date the building layouts or the 7 x 155mm gun mounts would be appreciated. This could help indicate what buildings were present in the Garage Area in 1932.
Kindest regards
