Golly guys, after 2200+ posts between you... I wish I had such an enviable 99.99% score! Remember when I blindly posted that reverse image of North Dock and said it was South Dock? I'll bet EXO got a good chuckle outta that one--

EXO has a bad memory, and doesn't recall that "reversal of image" at all. He prefers to express his gratitude for all the great posts you have contributed throughout your time here, particularly those great Japanese propaganda images.
Indeed, EXO thinks that we have a very fine Special Interest Resource Group here, and he cannot think of anything better for this forum than for us to have "more of the same."
Except for the occasional crapola from World of Wartcraft Gamers and Chinese spammers.

Thank you, EXO. And most of all, thank you for providing this fine website, and its accompanying forum!

With regard to the 240 shell coming down the "ventilation shaft" of SL-8, I offer another possibility. SL-8 was originally designed so that the SL could be rolled out like a normal SL. It was also designed to be able to operate as a 360 degree light by means of shining at a mirror at the rear of the SL tunnel, and then up the shaft to a rotating mirror at the top of the shaft. Whether this ever worked, or not, I have no idea.
Further, I'm not aware of any SL that had a generator inside the shelter. As such, I wonder whether Lt. Friedline and the others were killed in a power room that was up on top of the ridge behind the shelter? Waddayathink?

I can only rely on information that various sources provide. This is new to me. Where did that information come from oozlefinch? Do you have any blueprints or RCW of this Searchlight that you would be willing to share?

Actually, I do; however, I'm somewhat technologically challenged. I'll ask someone if they can do it for me so that it can be posted. Have you known of any SL positions that had generators right in the shelter?

In looking at the plan for SL-8, the power came from a 25KW set installed in the old land defense magazine on top of the ridge about 35-40' south of the top of the vertical shaft. If that was indeed the power for the SL, then that is probably where the men took shelter and died.

In talking with ArmyJunk, he thinks I may be thinking of SL-1, where they had a contraption such as I described. If you ask my wife, she'd probably say I was a bit touched; however, I still think they had such a thing up on the hill. Why else would they have designed a 6' square vertical shaft 38' high with a roof over it. In any event, I'm gonna check another source.

oozlefinch,
I do not know of any SL shelters that had the generator inside them. Most shelters seem only large enough to roll the light inside them.
SL#1 definitely was the mirror type.

I went to 2 reputable sources and neither have anything that works in favor of my theory. I do have a set of plans that shows the vertical shaft as a finished structure; however, anyone who has seen the SL shelter would never say that it was finished. Maybe during the construction they decided to delete that feature after completing the shaft. In any event, one of my sources concurs that the generator was, indeed, in the old land defense magazine, so maybe I'm right on 1 of 2.
