Hi chadhill, I see what you mean about the bottom photo in Reply #325. I missed that for sure and you are correct. The photographer is looking through some damage to the western side of the shelter across an intact gun. Good catch and thanks for straightening me out on that point. I am sure that you are not seeing Gorda Point (beside Mariveles on Bataan) above “75mm SHELTER?”. That is a chunk of the northern end of the top of Malinta Hill which is directly behind what may be the shelter. In those photos you are looking north and Gorda Point would be WNW from there. There is a real advantage to more than one set of eyes trying to pick out information from these fuzzy old photos. Your observation regarding the branches appears to be correct also. The distant view looks very familiar so I never even noticed the branches. Hey Patty, good size now and a great view too.

Fots - My memory sez that there were 2 shelters on the south portion of the ridge, one complete and one wrecked. Is my memory playing tricks on me again?

Thanks, fots. I reviewed some photos and believe I see the "chunk" on the northern edge of the ridge that you're talking about. Sure is nice to be appreciated...BTW, she drives the newer car Oozie, you must be thinking about Shelters 2 and 3 in the first photo of Reply #325 by fots. Right?

Chad - No, my recollection, although it may be faulty, is that there were 2 shelters south of the East Defense Officer Station. In '87 one was complete, and the other was damaged. In '89 the damaged one had been scrapped. I found some of the re-bar from it, I believe, on a trail down from SL#8 where it had been dropped by one of the scrappers.

oozlefinch,
South of the East Defense Officer's Station is a small underground magazine and a siege gun position. Other misc chunks of concrete are also lying around. To my knowledge there were no gun shelters in this area. That does not mean that there were none though. Do you have any photos of them?

Fots - It's probably my early seniality raising its ugly head, but that's where I thought they were. When I get a chance I'll try and find them in my slides and scan them.

The following interesting photo was posted by armyjunk on the CDSG Forums at: tinyurl.com/boygfbfAs armyjunk noted, the photo is from the October 1945 Case Report, "Report on War Damage to the Harbor Defenses of Manila and Subic Bays". The photo is captioned CONCRETE COVER FOR 75MM GUN ON MALINTA HILL. From the looks of the sloping concrete roof, my SWAG is that this is the collapsed 75mm shelter seen in the Japanese Philippine Expeditionary Force photo, the 1942 Japanese newsreel, and armyjunk's 1945 aerial view of the eastern side of Malinta Hill. The photo below was posted by fots on another thread. It shows a 75mm gun at an unknown location on Corregidor. A circular rail is attached to the tail piece, and the weapon is mounted on a round concrete pad. It looks like these components can be seen in armyjunk's photo above.
