My father, Gerald Wakefield, was attached to the 59th Coastal. I have been unable to locate his name on any of the rosters for the 59th. He was a messenger and was assigned to lead a squad fighting on Monkey Point during the invasion. He was one of the sole survivors from his squad and was captured during the first night of fighting. He was shipped to Cabanatuan and then to Palawan. On Palawan he was friends with Eugene Nielsen of Provo, UT. Eugene's story is the introduction in the book "The Ghost Soldiers" and is a must read. My dad was shipped out of Palawan prior to the massacre and eventually ended up on the hellships on his way to Japan.

My father (Holger Larsen Holm) was on Corregidor (Battery C, 60th Coast Artillery) and also was at Palawan. Was shipped out prior to massacre and wound up at Nagoya Camp No. 3 at Funatsu, Japan.

The 59th CA was awarded three (3) Distinguished Unit Citations aka Presidential Unit Citation w/2 OLC's. The unit als was awarded the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation. All recipients of the former may be awarded the Bronze Star Medal.
Ref: The Official U.S. Army History by Louis Morton "THE SIEGE OF CORREGIDOR" Meanwhile General Moore had stripped his seacoast batteries to provide additional troops for beach defenses. At the first news of the landing, men from the 59th Coast Artillery (Batteries, Cheney, Wheeler, and Crockett) were made available to Colonel Howard. Later other coast and antiaircraft artillerymen were released from their assignments and formed as infantry troops.
Those who fought the enemy as infantrymen are entitled additional recognition including the BSM (OLC) [with] the Combat Infantryman badge.
