In answer to a previous question about Col Paul's earlier diaries I have no good news. Paul D. Bunker III is the owner of these manuscripts and my contact with him was about eight or ten years ago. I have been unsuccessful in reconnecting.
I would like to share Paul's family (his genealogy) with you, perhaps it will give you some insight into the career of Paul and his children. Paul graduated from West Point in 1903, the same class as Douglas MacArthur. His two sons, Paul Jr '32 and William Beehler '34 also graduated from USMA. Paul's daughter Landon Priscillia married one of her brother Bill's classmates, Thompson Brook Maury '34. You can imagine how proud the colonel was about his family.
Paul Jr married in June 1933 to Elizabeth Haynes, they had a daughter Carye in June 1934. Tragedy struck when Paul Jr was practicing bombing missions, a bomb prematurely blew up beneath his airplane on 7 Jan 1938. He was in the Army Air Corps and stationed at Schoefield Barracks in Hawaii. Col Paul returned to West Point with his son's ashes; Paul Jr is buried is the 1st row behind the old Chapel.
Elizabeth eventually re-married and Carye was adopted by her step-father Dr. Richard Watson.
When Paul Jr died, the colonel convinced his son William to name their son Paul D. Bunker III.
Lt Gen William Beehler Bunker had a distinguished career in the Army, dying at age 58, as Commanding General Army Material Command, Washington DC. He is buried in Arlington.
Landon Priscillia's husband Maj Maury was captured at Bataan and he died on a POW ship Oryoku Maru on 15 Dec 1944 in Subic Bay. I wonder if he knew the colonel died about 18 months earlier at a Karenko, Taiwan POW camp?
In 1948, the colonel's ashes were re-interred next to his son at West Point.
The Bunker Family Association (BFA) celebrated the colonel's life in 2006 with a grave-side service at USMA. Grandchildren of the colonel were in attendance and decorated the graves of grandfather and great grandfather.
Col Paul was elected as the first president of the BFA in 1913 and we give credit to Paul for his endless research of our family. We published our first genealogy in 1931, it was typewritten with five onion-skin copies, then hard-bound. It contains much of the data from Paul's copious notes.
I had planned to visit Australia in April to celebrate Eber Bunker building his home 200 years ago. Eber is known as the Father of Australian Whaling. Now with the thought of walking the tunnels on Corregidor, I must rethink my plans and especially the budget.
Cheers, gil
