A complete set of Dag tags fror a 503rd paratrooper were found this trip to Corregidor at Battery Wheeler. They were unearthed in a trench atop Battery Wheeler. The trench area, and the whole top of Wheeler had recently been taken back to bare dirt from the jungle by Benedero and crew. The tags are described thusly........ Still on the original chain, both tags present, one damaged, small holes. One tag is on a smaller chain of the same sort and the other is on the main chain. Knots were tied at each tag. According to this website, Matthew died as he dropped to the ground. He, and 3 of his fellow mortar group, parachuted into Cheney Ravine, missing the Drop Zone, and were killed by Japanese fire. Bert Caloud, at the American Cemetery in Manila, says that he is not buried there, or listed as M.I.A. So he must have been returned to the states for burial after the war. So what puts his Dog Tags in a trench above Battery Wheeler?
I have contacted his Commanding officer from that time, Bill Calhoun, and we are working to find the family to return the Matthew's dog tags. Any help would be appreciated....
