70TH LINGAYEN GULF LANDING ANNIVERSARY AND THE 8TH PANGASINAN VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION
2015-01-09
This event was truly a celebration for the WWII Veterans and their relatives, their friends, people of the Pangasinan and all people who cherish liberty!
A few other allied postwar veterans joined in the celebration and we were seated in the 2nd row, west side of the two large seating tents.
My impression was that the Pangasinan and National Government went all out to make it a memorable celebration. They mobilized a lot of manpower and assets to make it an impressive and smooth event. I liked it and I am happy that I came.
As usually I uploaded my pictures into an album with 34 images and here it is:
tinyurl.com/qehpzaoOne noteworthy event I want to single out here, a retired US Sailor donated a 70 Miniature Ship Collection who named it Lingayen Invasion Fleet-MacArthur’s Return to Luzon January 9th 1945.
If you are interested in a good history of the Lingayen Gulf Landing in 1945, this is a very good source-Triumph in the Philippines:

X1. The Pangasinan logo for the 70th Lingayen Gulf Landing Anniversary and the 8th Pangasinan Veterans Day Celebration.
X2. This is the earlier program of events for the 70th Lingayen Gulf Landing Anniversary and the 8th Pangasinan Veterans Day Celebration. The actual program was more elaborate but I failed to retain a copy.
X3. The program started with a Thanksgiving Mass and here some offerings are presented to the Vicar General, Diocese of Alaminos City who was the Mass Presider.
X4. The Google map of Lingayen Town with the main venue locations marked in. Some of us stayed at the President Hotel which is on a lot that belonged to the President Ramos family at one time.
X5. A more detailed map of Lingayen Town from EZ map for those who are interested.
X6. This is the place of Honor for the WWII Veterans; remember this day is also the Pangasinan Veterans Day Celebration.
X7. This picture is from a Manila Bulletin article. These are the WWII Filipino Veterans, the US General talked to them before the Memorial Service and expressed his appreciation for their service.
X8. THE VIP guests are greeting each other at the 70th Lingayen Gulf Landing Anniversary and the 8th Pangasinan Veterans Day Celebration.
X9. Maj. Gen. Jim Pasquarette Deputy Commanding General, US Army Pacific and Col. Bruce Murray Australian Embassy Defense Attaché to the Philippines are chatting during a break in the celebration schedule. Looking at Maj. Gen. Jim Pasquarette, the thought that Gen. Wainwright looked similar came to me immediately.
X10. The US General did not come alone, I asked that Colonel whether the Officer Gentlemen friends of the General also call the General Skinny, like they did Gen. Wainwright, he answered in the affirmative.
X11. The Honor Guard arrived; I believe they are in the uniform of General Aguinaldo’s Army in the US-Phil. War for their Independents.
X12. Wow! That soldier looks good, ram rod straight, well done! Like a Prussian?
X13. The Philippine Army Honor Guard and their band are exiting after presenting the colors and playing the Philippine National anthem.
X14. One of the last events was to get group pictures of the members of the four different Philippine Veteran Federation Districts of the Pangasinan Province.
X15. It was impressive, the Provincial Forces and Government mobilized a lot of man power to have a very smooth run 70th Lingayen Gulf Landing Anniversary and the 8th Pangasinan Veterans Day Celebration.
X16. This is a Manila Bulletin image. The US General and Philippine Officials are looking at the 70 Miniature Ship Collections who named it Lingayen Invasion Fleet-MacArthur’s Return to Luzon January 9th 1945.
X17. A large sign about the 70 Miniature Ship Collections who named it Lingayen Invasion Fleet-MacArthur’s Return to Luzon January 9th 1945. It was donated by the retired US Navy man Russell Leon Sandlin who resides in San Marcelino, Zambales.
X18. This is a Philippine Daily Inquirer image of the 70 Miniature Ship Collections who named it Lingayen Invasion Fleet. The US General and Philippine officials are gathered around the display. The person at left is the Pangasinan Vice-Governor; he told me he originated from Olongapo after he engaged me in conservation. The 4th person from the right in a black shirt and engaged in conservation with the US General is retired Sailor Russell Leon Sandlin. The person to his left side is the present Pangasinan Governor.
X19. This picture is also from the same Manila Bulletin article and shows General MacArthur landing the last time on a Philippine shore. This time perhaps it was with a car or was it a helicopter.
