Hello, chad.
Could be possible. So the chopper could have flew in the camp days before the raid. I also don't have any books about the raid. Some stories on the net provides only the events surrounding the raid. Another corroborating story or document about the chopper would be helpful. Maybe the chopper story was sidelined because of the mission failure and/or maybe because of the greater picture the actual raid possessed at that time.

Guys, I also experienced that kind of restriction. I was inside the old Quarantine station at Mariveles. I was taking some photographs of the ruins when a guard approached me and made me delete the pics. He said that their administrator doesn't allow it.
We see those sites with our eyes but no photographs? What is wrong with them?

In his 1971 book "Ghost of Bataan Speaks" (p. 132-133) he mentions that in January 1945 a US helicopter, with a P-38 flying CAP, flew over the camp and attempted to drop a pre-raid message to the POWs. However, the message was blown beyond the men's reach and was not recovered. Was that after the firefight? Because there were merry-makers already, the japs were also not in sight, they could have been wiped out already. The pre-raid message would be late.

I'm wondering if it's really a chopper that Abie saw. Could it be one of the P-61 black widows that flew too low across the prison camp? They were used to divert the guards' attention while the rescuers move in. He might have thought(thru his recollection years after the rescue) that it was a chopper because of it's unusual appearance. It would be detrimental to the rescue operation to drop some leaflets on the camp. The Japs would be alerted.

Batteryboy
I have seen something like a long drop-tank at Lusong(Luzon) beach in Mariveles. It's made of some non-strategic material. They cut away the top and attached some outriggers on it. I'm wondering if it's from a Japanese plane. There's a story that Battery Cebu shot down a plane near Vigia point or near that Lusong beach. What do you think? I didn't bother to take a picture of it back then. It's only now that it made me wonder about it.

That's good to know that he's your personal friend. It's some sort of assurance or hope that there would be an update from him in the future.
Best regards.

You're amazing, batteryboy. I used to be a modeller but I was not good at it. Maybe you can post some more of your works. I always drool at the models displayed at the malls.

Maybe the buffs in here can offer a real "historical tour" service. That would be a good option to infect the people the sense of what Corregidor really was. I'm tired of the current tour set-up they offer. Would love to be on that kind of tour.

Karl
I've been on Tarak several times but only up to the first peak due to time-constraint (My wife and I are always on a day-hike mode). The story about the missing P-40 did made me climb that mountain.
Is there some new articles about the p-40 find? Some pictures?
