Old Train Station Promises Tourism

SAN FERNANDO CITY, Pampanga — The city government here is optimistic of the potential of the historic San Fernando Train Station to become a major tourist attraction in Central Luzon.
The city government has recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) for the transformation of its defunct historic train station into a tourist attraction.
Under the agreement, TIEZA will undertake the rehabilitation of the train station before turning it over to the city government for continuous maintenance and operation.
Located in Barangay Sto. Niño, the San Fernando Train Station was inaugurated by Governor-General Eulogio Despujol and Manila Archbishop Bernardino Nozaleda on February 23, 1892.
According to historical accounts, Dr. Jose Rizal debarked from the station on June 27, 1892 and again the next day en route to Bacolor town.
It was the ending point of the infamous 1942 Death March from which Filipino and American soldiers were carted to their final destination- Camp O’Donnell in Capas, Tarlac.
Prior to the MOA signing, San Fernando Mayor Oscar Rodriguez led the lighting of the “Apoy ng Katapangan” at the Bataan Death March stone marker in the train station as part of the commemoration rites of the heroism and greatness of the Filipino fighters.
Rodriguez stressed that every Filipino owes the freedom they enjoy at present to people who gave their lives to fight oppressors.
“It is our obligation to inform the public about these things. We must instill in the mind of our youth the sacrifice and self-denials of these heroes,” Rodriguez said.
Heritage and Culture preservation is included in the 8-point agenda of Rodriguez administration. This includes the restoration and preservation of historical sites to perpetuate their important contributions to our glorious past.
Rodriguez said the train station is one of the many historic sites and structures that the city intends to preserve.

Hey Phantom...This would appear to be positive news. Many Fil/American guys probably felt that this structure marked an end to their terrible ordeal, when, in reality, it was an indicator of more atrocities were to follow. Thanks for posting.

That's a good news. There are more historical sites that need preservation and markings, not just for tourism but to commemorate the heroic efforts done for freedom.

San Fernando Train Station, 17th June 2017 We heard that the San Fernando Train Station in Pampanga has been restored and is being preserved as a historic landmark. The city tourist office is also located there. Historic exhibits have been created, such as a life size diorama, historic pictures and artifacts are posted or are displayed and it is free. So, I had to go and had to bait my family to go along with a promise-SM Mall after our visit! Here is an album with high resolution images. It is hard to shoot hanging images with open doors, windows and the all the lights reflecting from almost every angle; so those images are not the best! The train station is located very close to the Pampanga Provincial Capitol Building! Ask for the Train Station, not the Railway, the first term is more common! The first 18 out of 53 images have been uploaded into this Flickr album, called - San Fernando Train Station, 17th June 2017, this is the URL, they are uploaded in high resolution: www.flickr.com/photos/44567569@N00/albums/72157685480952515Here are 6 sample pictures but they are much smaller; in the album the pictures are uploaded in high resolution: Z070. Clayton, his sister and Maywood Bataan Day Org., Maywood, Illinois, USA. This marker is in memory of the young men from Maywood who passed thru these portals of the San Fernando Rail, most never to return to their homes and families and who endured unspeakable atrocities in the course of service to their Country.
