Bataan,Corregidor,Clark,Capas Whirlwind trip 2017-08-07 to 11
Presentation 1 of 4
Chris Brennan, a friend of the MacArthur Memorial, and I teamed up and conducted a whirlwind trip of Corregidor, Bataan, Clark and Camp O’Donnell between the 7th and 11th of Aug. 2017. I shot only a few images but I still ended up with about 84 images. They are not comprehensive image coverage of this trip; they are rather just traces as to where we sped along for these 5 days.
The first 24 images have been uploaded to this Photobucket album:

Za103. Bagac Death March Marker #26.
-We wanted to start with the lower half of Bataan and our first stop was the intersection of the Bagac-Pilar Rd with the old National Bataan East Rd. Here is the last Bagac Death March Marker #26, which is the distance across Bataan. We are looking west. The last Bagac Death March Marker #26, American Legion Post 94 sponsored it.
Za104. Pilar Town Sword.
-Only a few 100 feet further from the last Bagac Death March Marker #26, is the actual intersection of the Bagac-Pilar Rd with the old National Bataan East Rd. A long time ago the people, the authorities or associations built this Sword Monument, there is no plaque, it must be for WWII. I saw this Pilar Sword a long time ago with Clark Boy Scouts marching by here. To me it is impressive, it caught my attention ever since. I speculate that the people put it here as a symbol to fight for freedom. The Pilar Sword stands in the middle, in a triangle, in the intersection where the Bagac Rd. meets the old National Bataan East Rd.
Za105. Death March Marker (DMM) #24 in Limay.
-This is the location of Death March Marker (DMM) #24 in Limay. I wanted to show my friend Chris a section of the Old National Bataan East Road. Death March Marker (DMM) #24 of the Death March route, Mariveles to San Fernando is one of four of the old, old DMMs still in existence. Death March Marker (DMM) #24 is sponsored by Mr. Donald Felbaum and family in Memory of Bataan Death March POWs April 9 1942. I like to thank them!
Za106. Filipino Nurses Plaque, Bataan WWII
-In recent years a special memorial plaque for the Philippine Nurses who served with the American Nurses and also evacuated to Corregidor under orders was established in Limay, Bataan. Edna Binkowski, a local citizen, got it done. She always felt that in all the stories about the nurses, the Filipino nurses were seldom mentioned and needed their own recognition. This special memorial Plaque for the Filipino Nurses is located along the old National Bataan East Road in front of the school in Limay Town Bataan.
Za107. Death March Marker (DMM) #24
-This Death March Marker (DMM) #24 also has a special place in my heart. Bob Hudson who is doing so much in maintaining these DMMs moved this one, actually had a new one built because the original was at a bad location. This Death March Marker (DMM) #24 honors MSGT James Baldassarre, he survived the POW ordeal. His son is the webmaster of the Battling Bastards of Bataan (BBB), this is their web page:
www.battlingbastardsbataan.com/ The other special point about Death March Marker (DMM) #24 is that Bob Hudson who moved this DMM to a better location is the son of another POW survivor and both fathers knew each other before and during the War.
Za108. Last Line of Defense Marker, at Alangan Rv.
-Between Limay and Lamao towns is the river Alangan and it has some steep banks. Here along the river was the last line of defense established but the situation was hopeless and Gen. King surrendered Bataan. This Last Line of Defense Marker is on the west side and just south of the Alangan Rv. Bridge. With the help of Edna Binkowski another marker was established across the street and bridge at the village plaza; it is easier to read.
Za109. Bataan Surrender Site in Lamao.
-Our next stop was Lamao to check on the condition of Bataan Surrender Site in Lamao, The Battling Bastards of Bataan wanted to establish it to set the history straight, it was here and not in Balanga where Bataan was surrendered. One thing we wanted to check on whether all the vendors are still located all around the fence of the Gen. King surrender Memorial. They are gone now; a public building project is being worked on. Mrs. Edna Binkowski also played an important role in coordinating with local officials that this memorial got built. But a new Public construction job is progress. I don’t know what is being build.
