'F' Battery, 60th CA and Kenny's Citation
Hi Matt Based on Battery Histories available on CHS, Battery Flint, manned by 'F' Battery 60th CA (A.A.), was near to Battery Cheney and during 1942 'F' Battery shared Cheney's mess and sleeping quarters.
After 'F' Battery marched to Malinta Tunnel, in preparation to participate in beach defense, it is possible Kenny was one of the group ordered back to Flint to bring more ammunition. From there he would have manned machine guns as the 3inch A.A. guns may already have been out of action or not enough members of 'F' Battery were available to form a gun crew. Kenny then assisted with the rendering Cheney's 12" guns un-serviceable.
Larger guns are rendered un-serviceable by explosives loaded into the chamber usually against a block barrel. It has been suggested that Battery Hearn was rendered using a bagged charge and a practice shell rammed backwards into the breach. Perhaps Kenny and Cheney's gunners worked out a method of getting one last round off at the Japanese Forces and rendering each gun at the same time.
Anyway, at least one person noticed and recorded Kenny's deeds that day.
Regards
mgk

Lanyard v Magneto firing of Coast ArtilleryI hate to suggest that there is a third method of firing (although using a lanyard as well) a Coast Artillery Piece. It involves 'holding the lanyard taught in the left paw and giving it a slap with the right paw'.

hey mgk....this photo is great. suitable for framing. i wonder if this pic was taken at corregidor or some other installation. regardless, i betcha that dog lived better than some of his human batterymates. seriously, after studying the picture a bit more, those fatigues sported by the two gunners look more like those worn a bit later in the war. could this photograph have been taken stateside (usa) ??. the guy up on the platform seems to be wearing khaki type clothing. could be from any period. not that any of this is important, just curious. i love analyzing military photos.

I think the photo was taken "Stateside" during World War 2. Use of this photo has some restrictions, so please don't copy.
