Fots - '87 is a long time back, but I recall Al McGrew showing me where MacArthur's house and then going to Kysor. It was either behind, or East of Kysor.

Registrar, I have been going to Corregidor since 1996 and for some reason, I have seen more snakes in the last two years than ever before.
ooxlefinch, I know of one small unlined tunnel in that area but there could certainly be more. I'll add that to my list for another look. Thank-you.

That comment rings true. Snake numbers increase when there is more food, shelter and water for them. Food would include chickens, I'd expect. But for any more info as to why there are more snakes now than before, we'd need to ask someone who is studying the Corregidor environment, and due to an overwhelming indifference and lack of a profit motive, the list is as follows: 1:................... 2:................... 3:...................

Re: Snakes - I've been on the island in '87, '89 and '06. In the 9 total weeks I was on the island, I (thankfully) never encountered one.

Lots of shots that tell a story of Corregidor's forgotten history fots, great job. My quasi tour for the year?
A couple of questions. Was the wash tub in front of, (or inside), one of the houses, like those on topside, and could it have been a coal bin? I was glad to see that the turtle tracks that led inland from the water on South beach didn't end in a big hole..........
That tunnel complex pictured on Infantry Point would have been a good location for a Banzai drinking party as the American line stopped just before Infantry Point for the night in 1945. A Banzai charge there was riddled by 75 millimeter cannon fire from Topside Parade ground as the Japanese were forming up south of that tunnel complex.
South Shore road does look as though it's all but done. There are some pretty good size trees from above in the rubble, a look at the conditions on the top southern end of Malinta hill might be interesting, but done with caution.
Corregidor is still listed as an active volcano with several small tremors daily according to the Philippine vulcanologists.
Also interesting, there seems to be little gray lahar on the south side of Corregidor while the north side has deep pockets in places. Denver Hill area for one example. The Denver Hill tunnel is dug up through old lahar, probably from Mount Marivelas to the north. Could have been brought there by explosion or phyroclastic flow. To much National Geographic?

Hey Fots2
I was excited to see the video and pictures of Battery Monja on 02/25/2012. It was (and still is) on my short list of places to investigate closer on my next visit.
I was curious as to the multiple mounds of dirt in the tunnel. There does not seem to be any cave ins in the area but the dirt is there anyway. I thought of constant 69 years worth of rainfall, but the entrance, as I understand it, is on a cliff face and I would think be immune from erosion stacking the dirt, though I admit to not knowing for sure. Did I miss a cave in or something else on the video that would explain this?
Can you shed some light on this for me?
Thank you ahead of time and as always, my apologies if this was explained elsewhere on this site as I am avidly and excitedly exploring all these posts several years after the fact. Please forgive an over excited fellow traveler!

For Fots2
OK, never mind, I THINK I see the cause. 'after further review' at about the 1:30 mark I see what looks like they started to tunnel on the right side. You kind of went past it fast and I did not catch it till the second time trough.
Any thoughts on that location? Do you think it was Battle/suicide related,or were they just tunneling on their own? Possibly by the 20 or so Japanese holdouts who were there till Jan. 1, 1945?

When I first went into Monja back in '87 the gun pit was filled in, probably from slides and mudflows coming in through the gun opening. One had to slide in and down the mound about 20-25 feet before one could stand up. At that time there were no dirt mounds in the tunnels. I wonder if the dirt mounds are from someone digging out the gun well? Fots, you say that there is a Japanese tunnel below Monja that connects with it. Where does it connect? Also, quite a number of years ago I remember seeing on the internet a photo of the opening of one of the tunnels. I'll have to see if I can find it.

Greetings, Oozlefinch
Good swag on the dirt mounds, and since you were there and saw it so many years ago, I will yield to your more experienced views. Fots2 went right past that hole I mentioned that I saw a the 1:30 mark. Could all those mounds of dirt be from some recent tunneling starting at that hole? Though why someone would want to tunnel right there is beyond me. Perhaps there is another structure close by that they were trying to locate? Can't wait to get there and investigate myself, but if someone beats me to it I would not be upset,,,,,,unless they didn't bother to post and add pictures to share.

I liked that shot of searchlite 8's platform and shelter. Tell me, do you know if the shelter was just for personnel or was the light itself on some kind of track system or wheels so it could be hidden and protected when not in use? I would think that something that delicate would need special protection, but I did not see any evidence of a rail system. Like I said, wheels, perhaps? I have only seen close up pictures of this kind of light and it does not look like something that is small enough to just wheel around. But again, I am speaking from confessed ignorance of this subject.
I also LOVED that panoramic shot of Topside taken from the top of Malinta Hill. It really shows a good view of the topography of Middle Side. There seems to be a large hill just past Engineer Dock. Does this hill have a name?

Here's a question for everyone. A previous picture in this thread shows a 155 poking out of the front of the Btty Monja casemate. There is a substantial amount of concrete in the opening that is not there today. In the retaking of Corregidor the Navy ships shelled a good many "caves" wherein the Japanese purportedly set up guns. Here's SWAG - did the Japanese use the 155 that was in the casemate, or put another gun there that would have caused the Navy to shell the casemate? Or, does anyone think that maybe scrappers did the damage?
