Hey Fots....I realize that this highly, uneducated, "stab in the dark", borders on the ridiculous, but could that "round" object be a rather large bomb crater that left a circular pattern of rocks, etc just above water level? Now, before you start laughing at my theory, tell us you weren't kidnapped, while down South, and held for ransom ala some missionary. It has been some time since you have graced this forum. Cheers.

Hi okla, You may be correct. Whatever it was is gone now. As for my being in the south, apparently I was deemed to be “not worth the effort”. Davao and area is quite safe. Unfortunately the media only reports bad things, danger is not lurking behind every corner. We enjoyed the trip. Like elsewhere in the Philippines, the people were very nice and the scenery was great. Here are a few photos for you. The highest mountain in the country is Mount Apo at 2,954 meters.

Hey Fots....Thanks for posting the eye popping pics of Mindanao. Yes, it would seem that about anywhere in the PI is gorgeous. Luzon gets all the attention, etc, but the other islands certainly don;t have to take a back seat as far as scenery goes. A buddy of mine from back in college is married to a local "beauty" from Cebu City. She is always saying that the other islands/areas get short shrift, viz Luzon. Cheers. Postscript....'fess up, Has your trusty, pocket camera ever failed you? It would seem that you never take a bad photo.

Hi okla,
I certainly agree with your comments. There are beautiful places all over this country.
My trusty little “Point and Shoot” camera and I do take our share of bad photos. My secret can be summed up in one word, “quantity”. If I take enough photos, odds are that there will be something worth keeping.

A comment in support of the Philippines. I second fots view, get outside crowded Manila and the bad traffic you are in a different world. Manila has its perks but......
I took a bus to Laoag in Illocos Norte. Very clean and not congested. (P500.00 for littering.) Enjoyed the food, the scenery, and the people, everywhere I went. Spent a night at Hotel Illocandia, what a spot. Saw huge sand dunes miles inland, (running for miles), from the sea, how old, hundreds, thousands of years?
Vigan was historical, also clean, must spend a few days there. (Don't buy the silver dollars from the 1800's, made of steel, bought three, duh, will bring a magnet next trip.) Nice roads all the way, safe all the way also.
Also visited the town of Taal on the south side of Taal volcano. A small Vigan with old Spanish homes and a cathedral built in 1574 that is bigger than Manila Cathedral. it is undergoing a huge restoration at this time. Taal is maybe 2 and a half hours from Manila, Laoag is 10 hours by bus.
Taal survived intact in World War II because we didn't defend it in 1941 and neither did the Japanese in 1945, to far off the beaten track then. (We dropped paratroopers on north Tagaytay ridge on the opposite side of the volcano from Taal in 1945, I found a green copper 30 caliber slug on a Tagaytay slope on one trip there.) Taal is right on the coast built on a hill. What a view from the Church belfry! Good roads, follow the signs from Tagaytay.......... End of travelogue.........

Hi Fots, I've got to study that breakwater photo some more. Looks very interesting. I have lots of catching up to do on some great posts that you and others have done. Unfortunately, I have been overcome recently by a certain four letter word ("work") and a couple other commitments. I think things will lighten up soon so I came get back to the "important" stuff here . I also finally got the 1936 map from EXO, and all I can say is WOW!! Later, Chad

Hey Chad....I had begun to worry about you. Thought, maybe, you had been recalled to the Fleet. A "can't keep a good man down" thing and all that good stuff. Cheers.

Hey Fots....Well this 1930 photo blows my "bomb or shell crater" theory all to hell, but is this structure, object, etc in the same location as is the one shown in the 1945 shot??? Maybe I am in error, but I don't think so. Whatever these "things" are, it does seem that they were a rather permanent fixture around that portion of Bottomside. Cheers.

okla, I am pretty sure it is the same object but I have no idea what it would have been there for.
I finally have some time to get some photos together for you. Another "fix" is coming soon buddy.
