Karl lives nearby. He would know for sure if there are memorials to the Oryoku Maru.

Hey Chad....Pertaining to any POW Monuments....If there are none, there should be. Seems that I have read/heard about a monument for the Oryoku Maru POWs being in the works or maybe even has been completed by now. Thanks for posting the pics of the Chapel. Subic must have been a great duty station. One of my oldest friends from High School was there for almost three years during the big build up during the Korean conflict years. He was a "CB" and up to his ear lobes in the construction activity that was going on at the time.. I have commented, on this forum, about his lack of any sense of history. He never toured Bataan or Corregidor. Probably never heard of the Oryoku Maru and the tragic events surrounding that event. All he did was hit the "gin joints" in Manila and Olongapo. Had I been there I would have engaged in some of those activities (as I did when in Japan on R&R), but you can bet your hat that I would have found time to look Bataan and Corregidor over at least once. Some people puzzle me big time.

Thanks, guys. My suspicion is that after the war the base chapel was intentionally built at the site of the tennis court, in memory of the POWs. I could kick myself for living there 3 years and having looked in the wrong place (Subic O'Club area). If only I had seen that 1944 photo...
Okla, I know what you mean about being "puzzled" by people. I was based in Subic/Cubi for 3 years, and out of the hundreds of folks that I came to know only a couple had even a passing interest in the history of the area.

Hi Chad, That is a great section of a Subic map you posted. I have been trying to visit as many of the buildings as possible (time/security guards allowing) before they disappear and so if you have any more sections of the map or even a list of building numbers and what they refer to it would be very welcome. As I will be passing through Subic sometime next week I will look around ivo the church for any memorial to the POWs of the Oryoku Maru. This website also details a more recent memorial: www.hellshipsmemorial.comBut at least on a quick glance does not say where in Subic it is.

Hello fireball,
That Subic chart lists many building numbers and mentions only some building names. Sorry, but there is no key or legend for them on it. That may have had to do with security reasons. When I was there, strangely enough many buildings were simply spoken of as numbers. Shoot me a private message with your e-mail and I'll be glad to copy the rest of the chart and send it to you. It'll be in several sections, though, since my scanner is not very big. Thank you for that interesting link, which I hadn't seen before. Yes, please tell us if you find any memorials.
Chad

Thanks again for an interesting link, fireball. I e-mailed the chart, let me know if you don't get it or if it got scrambled up somehow. Chad

Is there not a former Admiral's guest house in Subic Bay, of some size, between the beach area and the Chapel pictured above?
I was in the area last year walking around near there and saw the decrepit old house there was a sign naming it as the former Admiral's guest house. It is being allowed to fall apart, to bad looks historic in architecture, probably post war construction.
Lots of old stone wall sections near the chapel, look Spanish. The grounds around and in front of the Chapel looked interesting, much more so now that I know what was there before. Sand and rocks blown by the wind give it an older look. Church has a new roof it appears.

Yes Phantom, you are right, I googled it and the Admiral's Guest House is just SW of the chapel, near the Courtyard Inn. Roughly halfway towards the beach.
