A piece of concrete along the beach between Geary and Searchlight Point. Possibly from VIII-F-2.
One of two shallow caves in the western side of No Name Point.
The other shallow cave adjacent to the one above.
Up the cliff between No Name and Wheeler Point. I had just been up there a few days earlier.
Another shallow cave across from the other two. This one is in the eastern side of Wheeler Point.
A shot of La Monja Island.
Before I rounded Wheeler Point, I went up to try and find Battery Monja. Everything was overgrown; I left most of my things behind a tree just off the beach, because backpacks have a tendency to get caught up in vines. It made getting there easier, but I left my map with my stuff, so identifying some things I found on the way was a little tricky. I also got a little lost on my way down. Oops.
This isn't a great picture, but I think it is the Panama Mount for Battery Monja. The rest of the concrete was buried in dirt too deep to kick away, so this is all I have on the subject.
This picture isn't great either, but nearby the Panama Mount there is this. Someone dug into the rock for some reason, but I have no idea what the reason may be.
I eventually made it to Battery Monja in the casemate. This is the tunnel dug out right beneath the casemate.
From the same position, I looked up and took this photo of the concrete casemate itself.
Most of these photos are at least slightly blurry due to no flash. This is what you see looking into the tunnel.
Here's a few photos of the interior. There's a significant amount of damage to the concrete.
Note the "dry river" that was eroded into the soil.
There's a turn in the tunnel, but no sunlight reached there, so unfortunately no photos.
Looking back out of the tunnel.
I made my way back down the hill with only a few slips and slides. Mission accomplished. So far I hadn't had to swim too far. Mostly just a few meters worth of ocean to conquer. After rounding Wheeler Point, there is a fairly long stretch that is only passable by swimming. I saw a few jellyfish in the water, which made me a little hesitant, but I made it without being stung. Thank goodness.
After my swim, I came across this. I have no idea what it is. Wheeler Point is in the background.
The western end of Corregidor has some really steep cliffs.
I walked a little passed Cheney Ravine and got a picture of Conchita Island. I was originally going to swim it, but I was getting quite dehydrated at this point.
I have no more photos after this. However, the adventure wasn't quite over. On my way up the ravine, the sides of the ravine got quite steep and before me stood a giant clump of rattan. I thought about trying to go back and go around it, but I wasn't sure what that would entail so I stuck with it. I've never really liked the rattan plant, but after this encounter I developed a new hatred. Between this, the dehydration, and the snake I saw on the way back, I was
very glad to be back in my hammock at the end of the day.
