Ft. Hughes, like Ft. Frank, is an amazing place. There's a lot we don't know about what's there. The more I think about the supposed slits in the cliff face under Battery Gillespie, the more I think that they are just marks on either the photo or negative. Why do I say this? 1) There is no reason to have openings there; 2) If they were there, the tunnel would be below the level of the loading platform of the battery; 3) Unless any tunnel was built at an angle from the road/original railbed, the rear opening would be on the backside of a shear drop-off; 4) Any opening on the cliff front would be far smaller that what appears on the photo; 5) Imagine the effect on any tunnel underneath the battery when the gun was fired (assuming the tunnel was made by the U.S. Army) and 6) There's just no logical reason for anyone to spend the time and trouble to build what would likely be at least a 150 ft. tunnel to that location.
