Earlier in this thread there was a discussion about the sinking of the hellship Oryoku Maru, and of the POWs who swam ashore at Olongapo and were imprisoned in the tennis court. A number of the POWs subsequently died and were buried nearby. David Metherell, on page 7 of this thread, posted an interesting 1947 photo showing an AGRS recovery crew digging for remains. I will make a SWAG about the location of that photo. (photo courtesy Karl Welteke) This 1928 photo, posted earlier by Karl, clearly shows the Olongapo sea wall. The photo above was taken on December 15, 1944 by an aircraft from the USS Hornet (CV-12). In the center is the infamous tennis court. This is actually a cropped and enlarged section from the full photo that has been posted earlier, which showed the burning ship offshore and POWs swimming to the beach. Note the end of the sea wall, the road, and a bomb crater that I have drawn a line to. Recall that John E. Duffy, a US Army Catholic chaplain who was held at the tennis court, said "We buried 19 men just outside the court (tennis court) in shell holes. Now, if you should say you cannot feed and clothe, house and hospitalize 1400 or more men on a tennis court for a week, I would have to disagree with you. I have seen it done". (But Deliver Us From Evil, p. 96). (photo courtesy David Metherell) This photo, posted earlier by David Metherell, was dated October 23, 1947. The remains of four men were recovered here by AGRS but never identified. Note the road in the background, and what appears to be the end of the sea wall. Referencing the second photo, I will SWAG that the AGRS recovery crew was digging in the vicinity of the bomb crater seen in the 1944 photo. A typhoon struck Subic Bay in February 1947 and sank several vessels, including Kemp Tolley's former spy ship, the USS Lanikai. I suspect that the storm's erosion, along with debris washed up on the shore, would have been considerable and may have impeded AGRS efforts. * * * * * Late edit: This post war photo of the infamous Olongapo tennis court is courtesy of Mark Kelso, who retrieved it from the war crimes tribunal file at NARA RG 331, Case 154 US vs. Toshino. Over 1300 POWs spent six days here; at least eight died on the court. Mark's grandfather, Lt. Walter A. Kelso, Jr. was a POW who survived the Oryoku Maru, the Enoura Maru and the Brazil Maru hell ships, but succumbed to acute colitis at the Kokura Military Hospital, Japan on 4 February 1945. He was 27 years old.

This is what I have on the tennis court casualties. The general consensus is 8 from eyewitness testimony. Some say as high as 20 but most of the statements I have concur around 8. The eyewitness to deaths reconcile at 8. From what other have sent me it appears these casualties have number around the X-1480 range. All of their families have been identified and the ones I've contacted are willing to help. It would be wonderful to bring them home. PVT Lionel Couchon Captain Dwight Gribben - 0890060 1LT William Hogaboom – 5957 PVT George Kellog - 6581746 PVT Louis Kuckie - 6955663 PVT Joseph Pevey - 14016066 WO John Rice – 6971 CAPT Rollo Winnie - 0890277 My sources are NARA RG331 US V. Toshino et al. and Jim Erickson's database. Several of us worked on databases in the early 2000's especially Jim, Duane Heisinger, and I. Jim took all of the information from all of our sources and compiled it into something very respectable. It is about as close to the Oryoku Maru version of the Rosetta Stone as you can get. www.west-point.org/family/japanese-pow/EricksonCSV.htm

Japanese soldiers transit Subic Bay during the Bataan campaign. Za339. Japanese soldiers transit Subic Bay during the Bataan campaign. From "Philippine Expeditionary Force", published in occupied Manila, 1943. English photo caption is taped into the book. 2017-10-25 Note from Karl: This picture was original posted on page 4 of this thread by Chad Hill and is now restored there! I post it here again because it is a unique image of WWII and in Subic at that, my home! It was blocked by Photobucket because they changed their terms and caused a lot of damage to many of their customers. It is now hosted at another server!

Hi Karl
You are surely correct, that is a very unusual picture.
I have a question for you, what on earth are they doing on a raft made of oil drums? They had access to all kinds of small craft so why would they resort to something so primitive? It is listed as being shot during the Bataan campaign but they do not seem to be in any hurry to get where they are going.
2017-10-26 from Karl to Beirutvet: I don’t know, it is a big float and maybe one can put bigger things on it then those tine bancas (boats). I am surprised that they did not use bamboo as sticks.

Fort Wint (Grande Island) images from fots2 (John Moffitt) reposted. 2017-10-25 Note from Karl: These 32 pictures were original posted on page 6 of this thread by fots2 (john Moffitt) and are now restored. They were blocked by Photobucket because they changed their terms and caused a lot of damage to many of their customers. They are now hosted at another server! These two pictures are posted here again to make you aware; all 32 images are now showing again on page 6 of this thread: Z1fots066. Grande Island, ex Fort Wint from John Moffitt. No question what this station was, it is stenciled on the wall. B-1-2 for Battery Woodruff. Azimuth and Range readings are also recorded but are difficult to read now. Z1fots070. Grande Island, ex Fort Wint from John Moffitt. Here is a final view of a US Navy oiler as we conclude another boring day of exploring Philippine seacoast fortifications. (Just checking to see if you are paying attention) Thanks again to Karl for his hospitality during my visit.

Crande Island Pictures in 1999 from David de la Hyde. He put his information in the Shout Box on the bottom of our forum home page: corregidor.proboards.com/This is his URL about Grande Island: www.delahyde.com/lubang/pagesl/Grande_Island_Ex_Fort_Wint.htmlHere are some of his Grande Island pictures: Za509. Grande Island Hotel and Restaurant from David de la Hyde in 1999 These two buildings were used by the US Navy for recreational purpose, at least from the 1960s on. There used to be a sign directing visitors to this hotel and restaurant. Later under Philippine management they were used for the same purpose (Karl believes so). In our forum we have a page that claims that these buildings were used by the State Department and the CIA in the 1950s. This is the URL it also shows a nice picture of the hotel and not so nice pictures of the swimming pool: corregidor.proboards.com/thread/1171/grande-islandZa510. Grande Island Utility Building from David de la Hyde in 1999 This building, I believe was near the Mine Field Control Building. The Philippine Management also built a large utility building there. All buildings used by the Navy (MWR-Moral-Welfare and Recreation) except the hotel and the restaurant have been erased around 2004 by the new Philippine management to establish a resort. Za511. Grande Island Navy MWR building from David de la Hyde in 1999. This building may have been a Navy (MWR) convenience store near the beach. All buildings used by the Navy (MWR-Moral-Welfare and Recreation) except the hotel and the restaurant have been erased around 2004 by the new Philippine management to establish a resort. Za512. Grande Island Battery Warwick from David de la Hyde in 1999. I believe this is gun position #1, I like this black and white format. David de la Hyde has a great web page about his travels and it is mostly about the Philippines. This is the URL for his site index: www.delahyde.com/lubang/pagesl/Lubang_Island_Site_Map.htmlIf anyone has more information please let him know. Acknowledgement will be given.
