THE BATAAN MEMORIAL CEMETERY; WHERE WAS IT; WHAT IS THE HISTORY? Mr. Hubert Caloud and Ms. Edna Binkowski recently brought up the subject and discussed it on Facebook on their Facebook pages. Mr. Hubert Caloud provided some pictures and history and Ms Edna Binkowski went to the suspected site and interviewed eyewitnesses. Some of the material was screen captured and I will present some of the material here in segments. Mr. Hubert Caloud gave me permission already and I will ask Ms. Edna Binkowski now for her permission. Mr. Hubert Caloud spent a lot of money and effort photographing images and documents in our National Archives. Here are the pictures of the completed cemetery being turned over to the Philippine Government in 1947. They are copied from Mr. Hubert Caloud’s Facebook page. Photobucket doesn't let this picture open, at least not on my PC; here is the alternative, click on this IMG Thumb: X47. Bert Caloud’s initial Facebook entry re the Bataan Memorial Cemetery. X48. BATAAN MEMORIAL CEMETERY EARLY HISTORY. All this information came from the Facebook page of Hubert Caloud including the scanned documents of the cemetery history. These first three images are the captured conservation so far from the Facebook page. X59. Photobucket doesn't let this picture open, at least not on my PC; here is the alternative, click on this IMG Thumb: X60. X61. The last 5 images are the scanned or photographed documents from the National Archive and tell us that this cemetery was for the fallen Filipino comrades here in the Battle of Bataan. The cemetery was established in 1947 and turned over to the Philippine Government on the 15th July 1947. 2013 Filipino Service Men were reinterred to here; I wonder how many more were never found. This was a great sacrifice by the Philippine Army and people. X62. X63. Photobucket doesn't let this picture open, at least not on my PC; here is the alternative, click on this IMG Thumb: X64. X65. Ms. EDNA BINKOWSKI HAS LOCATED THE FORMER BATAAN MEMORIAL CEMETERY Ms. Edna Binkowski is a well known local historian and resides in Bataan. She is very active in maintaining some of the WWII Memorial Markers in Bataan and elsewhere. She has guided WWII Veteran Tours on Bataan and other areas in the Philippines. On the 18th of Jan. 2015 she posted an interview of an eyewitness to the existence of the Bataan Memorial. Here is the URL: www.facebook.com/video.php?v=306233766252401&set=vb.100005973396952&type=2&theater X67. This is the screen capture of her Facebook page in the search for the former Bataan Memorial Cemetery. The location of the former cemetery was on either side of the present road to the Mount Samat National Shrine. In Filipino: Shrine of Valor (Dambana Ng Kagitingan). Here are three maps that show the location of the former Bataan Memorial Cemetery based on the interview of the local eyewitness by Ms. Edna Binkowski. X68. These are my estimated boundaries of the former Bataan Memorial Cemetery. They are on either side of the present road to the Mount Samat National Shrine. In Filipino: Shrine of Valor (Dambana Ng Kagitingan). It also shows other landmarks near the cemetery. X69. These Filipino Soldier were interred again to the Heroes' Cemetery, also officially known as Libingan ng mga Bayani in Manila prior to the establishment of the Mount Samat National Shrine. This Google Earth image shows the location of the former Bataan Memorial Cemetery in relation to Mount Samat. Maybe it would have been a good idea to make the cemetery part of the Mount Samat National Shrine. X70. This is the approximate location of the former Bataan Memorial Cemetery in relation to Pilar and Orion Towns. They were on either side of the present road to the Mount Samat National Shrine. In Filipino: Shrine of Valor (Dambana Ng Kagitingan). I strongly suspect that the present road to the Mt. Samat National Shrine was the WWII battle trail #4 or at least part of it was.

THE BATAAN MEMORIAL CEMETERY IS ACTUAL ON THE MAP! X71. Look on this section from a 1:50000 map closely and see the cemetery is indicated on both sides of the street going up to Mt. Samat, it is called National Cemetery on the map. Look at the left lower corner. I had the map all the time but I never noticed the cemetery on it before; so much for my attention to detail! I have no doubt that this is it. Bert your question is answered, the Bataan Memorial Cemetery WAS HERE!!!. I have some pictures of this exact area and will present them in my next segment. X72. This is the same map but I marked it up for your information how this area relates the Final Battle of Bataan.

THE SITE OF THE FORMER BATAAN MEMORIAL CEMETERY, HOW IT LOOKED IN RECENT YEARS. 2013 FALLEN FILIPINO SOLDIERS WERE RE INTERRED TO HERE IN 1947 They were re interred again to the Philippine Heroes Cemetery in Manila. I don’t know when but I assume they were moved perhaps in connection with the establishment of the Mt. Samat Shrine under President Ferdinand Marcos. These pictures are from 2007 to 2012, I will visit this area again and have closer look yet. X77. If you use the landmarks on this map you will be able to determine the direction of the shots and where they were shot from approximately. X78. This shot is from the Bagac-Pilar Road towards the Mt. Samat Shine Gate (visible) and at left we see the Philippine-Japanese Friendship Building. X79. This shot is from behind the Mt. Samat Shrine Gate towards the Pilar-Bagac Road and at right we see the Philippine-Japanese Friendship Building. X80. The official name of the Mt. Samat Shrine is the heading of the gate on the previous picture: Dambana Ng Kagitingan. X81. The front of the Philippine-Japanese Friendship Building, the Japanese WWII Memorial in the field at right is visible. X82. Death March Marker #19 (DMM #19) on the Bagac-Pilar Route is located near the entrance to the Mt. Samat Shrine and in this picture we are looking from the Pilar direction. X83. From DMM #19 we see the Philippine-Japanese Friendship Building and the Barangay Diwa water tank along the Mt. Samat Shrine entrance road. X84. From DMM #19 we are looking south and towards the east flank of Mt. Samat. I had a closer look at that Japanese WWII Memorial Marker in the past but I cannot find a picture right now. I certainly will have a look at it again. X85. Again, DMM #19 as a marker, we are looking east now, in the direction of Pilar. Death March Marker #19 on the Bagac-Pilar Route is sponsored by the US Employees of the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

WHERE DID THESE FILIPINO HEROES GO TO? They were interred in 1947, I believe, to the new Philippine Heroes Cemetery, “Heroes' Cemetery”, also officially known as Libingan ng mga Bayani in Tagalog. Our Corregidor Forum has started a new thread about the Heroes' Cemetery. This is the URL: corregidor.proboards.com/thread/1956/heroes-cemetery-libingan-mga-bayaniHere are 3 sample images which you can find in this album in a larger format: www.flickr.com/photos/44567569@N00/albums/72157670617204331W985 (Z15) Heroes' Cemetery, aka Libingan ng mga Bayani, 2005-02-03, this is the special monument for WWII. W975 (Z16 Heroes' Cemetery, aka Libingan ng mga Bayani, 2005-02-03, this is the special monument for WWII Bataan and Corregidor. I don’t remember what it says on the other side nor do I have picture of the other side. W984 (Z27) Heroes' Cemetery, aka Libingan ng mga Bayani, 2005-02-03, it seems the cemetery is divided into many sections. This section is mostly for the Bataan Fallen and some other and it seems all have crosses. Everyone who has been to Mt. Samat will of course be familiar with the location of the now known original location of the cemetery thanks to Karl and Edna. I am not altogether sure that the removal and consolidation of these battlefield cemeteries from the original sites was for the best. With regard to the Libingan ng mga Bayani (translation Hero's graves), this term may be subjective, as there are those who are presently interred (and to come) due to political expediency in this compound just south of Manila, that may perhaps be somewhat less than heroic...depending on ones point of view.

The Philippine Bataan Memorial Cemetery at the foot of Mt. Samat in 1947.
Zc971. The Philippine Bataan Memorial Cemetery. This picture was sent by the Gen. MacArthur Memorial. Thank you very much. This is absolute proof that at the foot of Mount Samat, exactly there where the road to the Mt. Samat Shrine starts now from the Pilar-Bagac Road was the location of the Philippine Bataan Memorial Cemetery.
Read this whole thread and you will learn about the history of these solemn graves and who contributed in bringing to light their history. It is the history of these Filipino Soldiers loosing their life in the defense of their country. First they were buried here and then they were interred to the Heroes Cemetery in Manila.
This is really a great story and someday I’ll make a proper webpage about it.
