Nine Pictures Replaced and a Battery Woodruff image added! Nine pictures have been replaced in this page 18, of this Trip Report of Fort Wint and Grande Island, they had disappeared because of my fault. Here is a sample image: Z757. One of 4 pictures showing Gun #1 of Battery Warwick with two 10 inch Disappearing Guns in the former Fort Wint on Grande Island at about 1967. This picture was shot about 1967 by Charles (Chuck) Thompson a Navy Diver Veteran. ------------------------------------------------------------- Z764. Battery Woodruff, 6 Inch, Fort Wint, this should be No 2 Gun. John Duresky sent this picture of Battery Woodruff and said this is the only photo of any of the disappearing guns which I found in the Britt family things; by chance it's Battery Woodruff, a bit out of focus. John. John Duresky is the researcher of the writing team of the new book “Relentless Hope: A True Story of War and Survival, by David L. Britt” and he sent it to me. I have helped him out with some information and John Duresky is sharing almost all his finds with me. Thank you very much, John.

Story of a book & a Japanese boat sunk by gunfire Because of this book and the WWII gun fire story we visited the former Fort Wint, Grande Island, in Subic Bay. Army Lt Chester K Britt was one of 1,619 POWs that were on the Oryoku Maru. Lt Britt was first assigned to Fort Wint on Grande Island in 1940, then when it was abandoned on about December 24, 1941, he fought on Bataan, was on the Bataan Death March, then spent the next 2-1/2 years at Camp O’Donnell, Cabanatuan, Davao Penal Colony, and Bilibid Prison which he left at the end to board the Oryoku Maru. He survived the Oryoku Maru, then the Enoura Maru, then the Brazil Maru, then 3 months at Fukuoka POW Camp #3, then almost 4 months at the POW camp in Mukden Manchuria. He was freed on August 16, 1945. He died in 1953 due to health problems from his time as a POW. When he died my friend was only four years old. His son and 2 school mates wrote this book about Army Lt. Chester K. Britt and ask us to deliver dedicated copy to the present Grande Island Resort, click here and here for the 2nd link: corregidor.proboards.com/thread/2275/army-chester-britt-ship-oryoku?page=1corregidor.proboards.com/thread/2374/relentless-hope-true-story-survivalThe researcher of the book, John Duresky asked us get a visual image shot to Point Sueste from Battery Jewell because of this story, a short paragraph from this URL, click here: corregidor.org/chs_munson/wint.htmOn December 18 1941, a small boat with about 30 armed Japanese soldiers was observed heading toward Sueste Point Light House at the mouth of Subic Bay. Several shots were fired across its bow, but the boat did not stop or alter its course. Firing was then directed on the boat using one 3-inch gun at Battery Jewell and one 3-inch anti-aircraft gun at Battery C-91st. The boat was sunk with no survivors. On today’s Grande Island vegetation prevents you get a visual from any of the 5 former coastal gun batteries and the whole western coast (very rocky) cannot be reached directly due to vegetation. We had to walk down the western rocky coast from the island NW corner to reach a position under Battery Jewell to get visual shot to Sueste Point. Randy Anderson, the main person of creating the Hell Ship Memorial in Subic Bay was my partner. We were impressed with the looks of the resort. The landscaping is beautiful and all the old trees are big and are still healthy. The 10-inch Battery is locked up because it serves as a part of the Subic Bay International Airport Radar System. Only Battery Woodruff is hard to visit or even to indentify, it is a casualty of WWII. The other 3 batteries are cleared and open to be visited. This day, a company with over 100 employees was booked here and stayed here at least one night and we saw a large ethnic Chinese family visiting. The Mine-casemate is open to be inspected and has lights put in place for safety. The resort has a huge swimming pool and it is properly taking care of. Our day visit cost 2500 pesos per person and included the transportation, a guided tour with a golf cart, and a meal. It was a beautiful day, we enjoyed it and topped it off with a beer, I had two. Z749 is in back of Battery Jewell, our guide, at left, took us there via the Mine-Casemate and we met the spouse of the Grande Island Resort manager (off island today) and told her about our mission to deliver a book and she told us that a plan for a museum is in the works. Randy Anderson, the main person of creating the Hell Ship Memorial in Subic Bay, was my partner and is right in the picture. Z750 is in the dining hall, bar and event building, we are turning over the book Relentless Hope: A True Story of War and Survival, by David L. Britt, this is the front cover Z751 is in the dining hall, bar and event building, we are turning over the book Relentless Hope: A True Story of War and Survival, by David L. Britt, this is the dedication in the book to the resort. Z752 I had to walk over 100 meter over and on top of these rocks from the NW corner to reach this point on the Grande Island west coast to shoot this picture. Z753. Is the bottom section of a the San Antonio 1-50000 map, 7072-IV, and shows the points, Grande Island and were I shot the pictures from. Z754. A boat crept into the picture and I could not help thinking about the shooting event on the 18th Dec. 1941 for the Battery Jewell getting the 3-inch coastal gun ready and receiving the order to fire at an Imperial Japanese Invading boat approaching Sueste Point.

Sitio Alibang, new dirt road above Sitio Alibang is a small community, mostly Aeta, of Barrio Naugsol, Subic Town and is about 5 km up the Matain River. A few days ago, I walked up on the hill above my family new property, which is in that place but on the right side, the west side of the Matain River. From this height I noticed a new trail, which looked to me as a new Carabao sled trail and I checked it on this day. I learned and it seems a solar power company is building a new high voltage line and built this new dirt road service road. For this forum presentation I chose these 5 images, links for the albums are in back. Photo descriptions, I let all of them stay here. #001 imaged was shot on the 3rd of March and I spotted this new trail which is in the hills above Sitio Alibang is a small community, mostly Aeta of Barrio Naugsol, Subic Town and is about 5 km up the Matain River. --------------------------------------------------- #002 to #005 are images of my track and data in exploring the new dirt road above Sitio Alibang is a small community, mostly Aeta of Barrio Naugsol, Subic Town and is about 5 km up the Matain River. Z212. (002 Alibang above 240320) ------------------------------------------------------------------ #006 to 038 are images of entering Alibang, finding the new road, following the left branch of the road. I met people at the end of the branch road and they were digging holes for the electrical high voltage tower. Two Chinese surveyors were just leaving; they did not know English or Tagalog. So, these images are of the branch road and the views I was able to enjoy. I marked 2 pictures to indicate my new property and the thin layer of Mount Pinatubo ash. And I spotted a car, high up, on the new road, on the west side of the Matain River. Z213. (021 Alibang above 240320) Z214. (023 Alibang above 240320) Z215. (024 Alibang above 240320) ------------------------------------------------ #039 to #091 are images of the longer road going up. I had hoped that it would go all the way up to the Kalaklan Ridge, but it did not. At the dead end, at about the 270 meter height it was a dead end and maybe a tower is going to be built here. I marked the picture where and why I decided to turn around. At my age of 82 it seemed too risky now to me. I had walked on top of the ridge many years ago but I decided those days are gone for me. Z216. (083 Alibang above 240320) --------------------------------------------------- #092 to 095 images are of the start, beginning of this new dirt road to build a new power line. ----------------------------------------------------- The two photo albums: 95 images have been posted into an album at my Photobucket account, Philippines including my walks group, No 2 Phil events by year group, 2024 OC, BB, ZAM &SB group app.photobucket.com/u/PI-Sailor/a/1af23367-baa5-4a09-b195-0ee74736368b?field=TITLE&desc=asc--------------------------------------------------- Uploaded 25 images into this FB album and shared with: Raging Main, SBH3, BB Bars, SB Expats, BB Resident Assoc., This is the FB posting URL: www.facebook.com/karlwilhelm.welteke/posts/pfbid029mUoG4gGGnzc9taSgP9d8LCdHBq15QacpaNLpmbtRoKGS46MB4yf5AWDJKEywyBylThis is the album URL: www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10227696794559078&type=3

Corregidor Visit, First Flag 79th Anniversary, 2nd Album 2nd Segment of images out of four from this album #2 ---------------------------------------- #021 image is a structure between the Cine and the so-called Mile Long Barracks, it is not on any of the prewar maps, so it must have been build after the war. I never saw it being used just a bunch of discarded gear seems to be in there. ------------------------------------- #022 image is a section of the Fort Mills map as it pertains to this second segment of about 20 images. It is marked to help you find the location of the picture subjects. ----------------------------------------- #023 image show a set of steps from the road along the Senior Officer Quarters (SOQ) leading up to the Corregidor Lighthouse level where now are located several Manila Harbor control/radar towers or other communication towers. -------------------------------------- #024 to #026 images are of a short stretch of road that leads down to Middleside from the west end of the so-called Mile Long Barracks, more specific to a road intersection in front of the Ordnance Repair Shop. This short stretch of road passes the end of a row Fort Mills Quartermaster buildings ------------------------------------------ #027 to #029 images are of the road intersection in front of the Ordnance Repair Shop. The Ordinance Shop has a bloody war story. A paratrooper officer looked into it and got killed on the spot. His comrades opened up and fired into it with everything they got and then went inside and killed any surviving enemy. -------------------------- #030 to #032 are images of my continuing walk. #030 image shows the intersection to Battery Hearn and Battery Grubbs. Image #031 is a close up of the last image but shows clearly that Pvt. Carter earned his Medal of Honor at or near this spot fighting like heck, defending the Battery Hearn position. Image #32 shows Battery Hearn and the empty spot where the spare battery barrel was taken away from this Pacific War Memorial Zone for a tourist purpose. ------------------------------------------ #033 to #035 images are or of my continuing walk, I pass the road to Battery Smith but the road is grown over, image #33. At Battery Grubbs I shot this picture of a bomb or artillery round penetrated the concrete ceiling, image #034. On my way back I met a group of Corregidor day visitors at Battery Way, it was a retired Naval Officer and family. ------------------------------------------- #036 to #039 images take me to the road from the Fort Mills Hospital to the Fort Mills Commissary. Image #036 shows a stretch of woods down from the east end of the Mile Long Barracks, and I’m still trying to figure out why the vegetation here looks so different then everywhere else. Images #037 and #039 are of the Fort Mills Commissary. ------------------------------------------------ #040 and #041 are images of the entrance to the big parallel tunnel which runs from Middleside to near the so-called Mile Long Barracks.

Corregidor Visit, First Flag 79th Anniversary, 2nd Album This is the 2nd of 2 Albums. It is the first of four Segments! Perhaps our 20th commemorations visit to Corregidor to celebrate the liberation of Corregidor in 1945. This is the 79th Anniversary on the 16 FEBRUARY, 1945 "...at about 1100, two men from the regimental headquarters company, T/5 Frank Agrrigo and Pfc. Clyde I. Bates, climbed up one of the few still-erect telephone poles near the parade ground and attached to its top a U.S. flag that flew there day and night for the rest of the campaign." - Corregidor The Rock Force Assault by Lt. Gen E.M. Flanagan, Jr. Our 2024 Corregidor Forum Flag Raising Ceremony: corregidor.proboards.com/thread/2509/2024-flag-raising-ceremony--------------------------------------------- #001, #002, #004 pics and the pics from #008 to 010 are three pics of the Philippine-American Friendship Memorial topside, former Fort Mills on Corregidor Island. It has markers of the commands that defended the Philippines against the Japanese aggressor ----------------------------------------- #003 image is a section of the Fort Mills map as it pertains to this first segment of about 20 images. It is marked to help you find the location of the picture subjects. ----------------------------------------------------- #005 picture is the NE end of the former Fort Mills Parade Ground and shows a display of WWII weapons, the base of the Topside Trolley Station and the so-called Mile Long Barracks. -------------------------------------------------------------------- #006 image is the Rock Force Memorial/Marker located here at the east end of the Fort Mills Parade Ground on Corregidor Island. it is dedicated to all the units that participated in the liberation of Corregidor. ----------------------------------------------- #007 image shows the AGGIE MUSTER MEMORIAL ON CORREGIDOR Aggie Muster is about great pride in and tradition of the Texas A and M University. A memorial has been established on Corregidor in 2015. ----------------------------------------------- #011 to # 016 images are of the Pasic War Memorial Museum on Corrigidor Island. One piece of news is that the gun barrel in front of the Coast Guard building at Bottomside has been turned over to this museum and was put in the reception area of the museum. ----------------------------------------- #017 to #019 are pics, standing in front of the Fort Mills Telephone exchange, with a view towards the Pacific War Memorial and a view towards the Cine passed the present Museum. --------------------------------------- #020 is the Internal Flame Marker at the east end of the Pacific War Memorial.

Fort Mills SOQ and HQ Area, topside, Corregidor, 2024 On the 16rth of Feb. 2024 after we executed the 79th Anniversary of raising the First Flag of Corregidor Liberation, I walked around this area of the Fort Mills Senior Officer Quarters (SOQ) and the Manila Bay Defense Command Head Quarter (HQ) and took these pictures. ------------------- #01 image shows my starting point, in the middle of the Pacific War memorial, the entrance to the Memorial structure is behind me. Right is the Cine, dead ahead is the Philippine-American Friendship ----Memorial -------------------------------------------------- #02 image is a section of the Fort Mills map and I indicated the track of my walk and the landmarks shown in this album. ------------------------------------------------- #03 image shows the walkway, where I entered at left. One barely can see a trail, across this path, that goes to a battery control bunker and which is also where the so called Japanese Tunnels starts or ends. ----------------------------------------------------- #04 to #10 images are along the path way in front of the SOQ buildings (East Section) at ones left, walking from east to west. #10 image is the last 2 Story SOQ building in this west SOQ section. -------------------------------------------------------- #11 to #14 images show the last 2 one story SOQ buildings of the east section. Then we step onto the road to the Corregidor Lighthouse. Image #12 is a view towards the famous Corregidor Gen. MacArthur Flagpole, image #13 shows the south end of the HQ Building and #14 image is a view in the direction of the Corregidor Flagpole. ------------------------------------------------------- #15 to #24 images are views from the Famous Corregidor Flagpole in all directions. #15 image shows the West SOQ section, notice the clean road to Battery Wheeler. #17 image is the first SOQ of the East SOQ section. #19 image shows the Parade Ground and the Mile Long Barracks, notice the clean cut grass. #22 image is a view of the Ft. Ft. Mills Hospital on Corregidor 2024 I had a chance to walk to and walk around the Ft. Mills Hospital on Corregidor 16 Feb. 2024. It was a pleasant sight to see the hospital clear of vegetation, the grass and roads all around the hospital were cut and clean. Inside the hospital debris were taking care of ropes are rigged to indicate safe and unsafe, restricted areas. #00 picture is the view when you approach the Ft Mills Hospital, coming from Battery Way and using the trail/dirt road thru the woods. --------------------------------- #01 picture is a Google Earth image of the former Fort Mills on Corregidor Island and the location of the hospital. ------------------------------ #02 picture is a Google Earth image of the former Fort Mills on Corregidor Island and the location of the hospital, zoomed in! ------------------------------ #03 picture is the trail/dirt road thru the woods, coming from Battery Way. ---------------------------- #04 pic is a view of the Ft.
